You will need to prescribe the CPAP or Bi-PAP machine and make a referral to a durable medical equipment (DME) company. That DME company will notify your patient and arrange for equipment orientation and set-up. Following a patient for OSAS should be a combined effort. A CPAP machine blows one constant pressure. Your ideal pressure was determined during your sleep study. However, many factors can affect your ideal pressure over time, like weight fluctuations and even sleeping positions.

CPAP treatment requires a physician’s prescription. Our sleep center physicians prescribe a CPAP treatment only for patients they have actually evaluated and had a consultation with. When our physicians only interpreted a patient’s test result but did not actually have a consultation to evaluate the patient, they do not directly prescribe any treatments, including medication, surgery, dental appliance or CPAP therapy.

The long-term compliance with a CPAP machine can be improved with good patient education and guidance. After using a CPAP machine at a sleep center, about 70%-80% of patients accept a home trial. There are many manufacturers of CPAP machines and each with different models and features. Price, weight and options are the main differences. You should follow the CPAP manufacturer’s specifications to clean your CPAP machine. Disposable filters may be replaced every month. Generally, you should clean your mask daily, we recommend you soak the mask in non-lanolin antibacterial soapy water for 10-minutes, rinse and air dry. DO NOT USE ANY ALCOHOL cleaners on the mask! Your humidification system should be emptied each morning and leave it open to air-dry all day. Refill each night with distilled water.

Yes, most insurance policies will pay for your machine or rent the machine until paid for. Check with your insurance company. Try to determine why you are waking up. Is the room to warm or cold? Is your nose or mouth to dry? If so, try using a humidifier for your unit. Or, are you still snoring, if so, talk to your doctor.

Almost all of the new machines sold today are almost completely silent. The days of the big loud machines are over! Most of the noise generated comes from the exhale ports in your mask system. Yes, every mask system has to have exhale ports. This is a way to remove your exhaled air from the mask system. Without this, you would be breathing in your exhaled air, and would eventually run out of oxygen.
