Depending on where a woman lives she will be invited to attend either her local screening centre – of which there are 4 in Northern Ireland – or a mobile unit. Both perform the same function, but the mobile screening units have restricted access, so if a woman has limited mobility she may find it easier to attend the screening centre. No, this is a complement or adjunct to them. Mammograms look for lesions and most effective as women age; clinical evidence shows they are not very effective in women under 50. In contrast, HALO is looking for abnormal cells, years before they might turn into a lesion, and the test is effective in women as young as 25.
