What does "undefined reference" to blah-blah mean?

Beginner FAQ - GPWiki
This is known as a linker error and is the most common linker error. I'll assume you know about functions. Let's say you called a function that creates a window for you, CreateWindow(). Since you didn't write CreateWindow() and somebody else did, you need to tell the linker where to find CreateWindow() because it did not find it on its own. Maybe CreateWindow() is part of a library called XXX. The solution to this problem depends on what compiler/IDE you are using.

Why do I get an error about an undefined reference to "__inet_ntoa" or other __inet_* symbols?

Apache Server Frequently Asked Questions
If you have installed BIND-8 then this is normally due to a conflict between your include files and your libraries. BIND-8 installs its include files and libraries /usr/local/include/ and /usr/local/lib/, while the resolver that comes with your system is probably installed in /usr/include/ and /usr/lib/. If your system uses the header files in /usr/local/include/ before those in /usr/include/ but you do not use the new resolver library, then the two versions will conflict. See similar questions...

LessTif Frequently Asked Questions
On the other hand, please make sure that you've built the entire distribution with the same configuration. Not clear ? After running the "configure" command with its options, you should ideally run "make clean". Otherwise e.g. clients/Motif-1.2/mwm/Makefile may be configured such that it looks for stuff that isn't there in lib/Xm/* . See similar questions...

How does LSL handle undefined terms?

Larch Frequently Asked Questions
The following answer is adapted from a posting to 'comp.specification.larch' by Horning (July 19, 1995) in response to a question by Leavens (July 18, 1995). The trouble starts with your question: there are no "undefined terms" in LSL. LSL is a language of total functions. There are no partial functions associated with operators, although there may be underspecified operators (i.e., operators bound to functions with different values in different models). What does it mean when the linker says that _end is undefined?

Library Functions
That message is a quirk of the old Unix linkers. You get an error about _end being undefined only when other symbols are undefined, too--fix the others, and the error about _end will disappear. (See also questions 13.25 and 13.26.) My compiler is complaining that printf is undefined! How can this be? It's the world's most popular C function.. See similar questions...

What does "Undefined external symbol _main" mean?

EFNet #Winprog
You have specified in your project settings that you wish to create a console program instead of a GUI program, and the linker is looking for the main() function. Chances are you really wanted to create a GUI program, so you will need to either change this setting, or start a new project and specify the correct type (GUI). See similar questions...

Why the undefined reference to WinMain@16?

Cygwin FAQ
If you're using gcc, try adding an empty main() function to one of your sources. Or, perhaps you have -lm too early in the link command line. It should be at the end: bash$ gcc hello.c -lm bash$ ./a.exe Hello World! works, but bash$ gcc -lm hello.c /c/TEMP/ccjLEGlU.o(.text+0x10):hello.c: multiple definition of 'main' /usr/lib/libm.a(libcmain.o)(.text+0x0):libcmain.c: first defined here /usr/lib/libm.a(libcmain.o)(.text+0x6a):libcmain. Anchor(comp_undef)]]Why do I get {{{undefined reference to 'main'}}} errors?

GCJ FAQ - GCC Wiki
When using GCJ to link a Java program, you must use the --main= option to indicate the class that has the desired main method. This is because every Java class can have a main method, thus you have to tell gcj which one to use. GCJ will compile both source (.java) and bytecode (.class) files. However, in many cases the native code produced by compiling from source is better optimized than that compiled from .class files. See similar questions...

Why does (blah).rar not open and say it is a corrupt archive?

XBINS F.A.Q
You need to download the latest version of WinRAR. Since version 3.0, WinRAR uses a new compression algorithm which is superior, but sadly, not backwards compatible with older versions. Several other reasons may cause a corrupt download. Using a cracked copy of your FTP client (ie. FlashFXP) is a very probable reason. Try a free or shareware (uncracked) client. Also, be sure to download all the .zip and .rar files in BINARY mode. See similar questions...

Q7: What is the reference ellipsoid, and what does this mean physically?

TOPEX/POSEIDON Frequently Asked Questions
The reference ellipsoid is basically a convenience so that we don't have to work with larger numbers, and so that we can get more precision in our calculations. The reference ellipsoid is the best fitting ellipsoid to the geoid. An ellipsoid is basically a sphere with a bulge at the equator. To first order, this accounts for over 90% of the geoid. Also, sea surface height measurements from the center of the Earth are on the order of 6000 km. See similar questions...
