Are Ceramic Thermal Barriers Coatings the same as powder coatings?

Finish Line Coatings - Ceramic Thermal Barrier Coatings Exha...
The only similarity is that they are both baked-on finishes. Powder coatings are baked at 425 degrees to melt the powder to a smooth finish. You must never get it that hot again, or it will burn off. Powder coating is basically very tough paint that is available in almost any color. Ceramic thermal barrier coatings were developed by NASA and the aerospace industry thirty years ago, for thermal insulation on rocket and jet engines.

Why do I need Ceramic Thermal Barrier Coatings on my exhaust system?

Finish Line Coatings - Ceramic Thermal Barrier Coatings Exha...
Our coatings keep your manifolds, headers, exhaust pipes and mufflers from corroding or rusting. Coatings also retain heat within the exhaust system which give you a much cooler underhood temperature. A cooler intake charge means more horsepower. By retaining heat within the system, you create a scavenging effect which gives you more power. Our coatings can often also greatly extend the life of your parts.

How flexible are ceramic coatings?

faq
Extremely. They are designed to expand and contract with high temperatures, so they do not flake or peel with expansion.

How long will ceramic coatings last?

faq
As long as the piece is properly cared for and kept below the coating's prescribed heat limit, indefinitely. The coatings will also extend the life of the part 3 to 5 times it's normal lifespan.

Do ceramic coatings increase performance?

faq
Definitely. Because hot air travels to cold air very quickly, a higher exhaust gas velocity and a smoother flow is achieved, and the cylinder is left cleaner for the next intake stroke, increasing engine performance.

What about Jet-Hot Ceramic Coatings?

The Exhaust FAQ
A lot of the K1200RS and R1100S riders have their headers, etc. coated and most have reported very positive results. I've seen their promotional video and considered it before selling my K12. I personally don't plan to coat my Dakar. Kind of like it as it. YMMV. RogerN#827 Supposedly "JetHot Coating" has all the benefits as well as EXTENDING the life of header pipes, and has the added benefit of trick colors.

What color of ceramic coatings do you offer?

Classic Coatings Inc - Metal Ceramic Coatings & Powder Coati...
We offer 4 stock colors. These are Polished CermaKrome, Black Satin, High Gloss Black and Cast Iron Gray. There are other colors available and prices can be quoted on white, blue and red.

What is the price difference for Antimicrobial Coatings vs. other powder coatings?

Frequently Asked Questions about Steel for Wire Products
Approximately 100% more due to the cost of the active ingredient and the specialized method of incorporation, for which we hold a patent. Is there a feel due to Anitmicrobial Coatings which differs in texture from other powder coatings? I refer to "hand", in the textile industry sense. Generally, there is nothing in the feel or appearance of the coating that will indicate an antimicrobial product, but the incorporation process can lead to more orange peel.

Can powder coatings be applied on site?

FAQ
Powder Coatings are a factory applied finish using specialised equipment. The equipment includes an electrostatic spray gun, spray booth and an oven to bake (or cure) the coating. On site application is not possible given the hot curing cycle required to fuse the coating.

Can powder coatings be applied to wood?

FAQ
New powder coating technology has been developed by Dulux to powder coat engineered timber products like MDF board. Known as Dulux Trimatrx®, this unique powder coating is available only through Dulux Registered Applicators for Heat Sensitive Substrates. Dulux have tested many grades of MDF board with Dulux Trimatrx® and most boards provide a good surface for coating. For outstanding results, Dulux recommend Trimatrx® MDF Board in conjunction with the Trimatrx® Powder Coat.

How are powder coatings manufactured?

FAQ
Powder Coatings are produced by dry blending of resins, pigments, additives and curing agents, which are then extruded at elevated temperatures to melt mix the ingredients. The material then becomes thick and viscous like a honey mixture which is cooled using super chilled water, before the material is crushed progressively to a fine, well defined particle size.

Under what conditions can powder coatings be applied?

Crosslink Powder Coatings Inc.
Powder coatings are generally a one-coat finish, applied to a properly cleaned and pretreated substrate. Prior to spraying, the powder coating material is generally sieved and then fluidized for 10 minutes to condition it. Powder coatings are a factory applied finish using specialized equipment. The equipment consists of electrostatic spray guns (manual or automatic), a powder spray booth, and an oven to bake (or cure) the coating.

How safe are powder coatings?

Crosslink Powder Coatings Inc.
Powder coatings contain no solvents, which simplifies their transportation and storage, but are classified as a nuisance dust. Workers should use proper dust masks, protective garments, gloves and skin creams to prevent inhalation or contact with their skin. Use mild soap and water to remove from skin contact. Since powder coatings contain no solvents, they do not release hazardous VOC's (volatile organic compounds) or HAP's (hazardous air pollutants) into the workplace or the environment.

What temperatures will powder coatings withstand?

Classic Coatings Inc - Metal Ceramic Coatings & Powder Coati...
Most powder coatings will tolerate temperatures up to about 500° F. There are a few powders that will go to 800° F. but they are limited to black. For temperatures above that we recommend Ceramic Coating. Our Cast Iron Gray and Polished CermaKrome are good for temperatures up to 1,300° F. and our Satin Black is good up to 1,700° F.

Do ceramic coatings discolor like chrome?

faq
Chromex discolors only when a temperature of 1300 degrees is exceeded, at which point, the finish dulls, but does not turn purple or gold. Our satin coatings retain their color up to 2000 degrees.

Is your ceramic coating the same as other nationally advertised coatings?

Classic Coatings Inc - Metal Ceramic Coatings & Powder Coati...
Most ceramic coatings consist of the same base materials. The difference is HOW these materials are applied. At Classic Coatings, we have a long history of quality and maintain our certification in this area. We also have a warranty to stand behind our coatings.

Is Nansulate one of the ceramic coatings?

Nansulate Energy Saving Coatings - FAQ, Frequently Asked Que...
Many of the ceramic coating products obtain their insulating benefit from reflectivity off the white or light colored surface, making them more effective outdoors than inside, where there is no sun to reflect off of the coating, and by the use of small glass beads, or ceramic microspheres, which trap air. Nansulate's unique Hydro-NM-Oxide material creates a network of nano-sized, twisting tunnels, which the heat energy has to navigate.

Is there a standard for the safe application of powder coatings?

FAQ
Australian Standard AS3754 "Safe application by electrostatic spray" outlines the procedures for safe application of powder coatings. Copies of this standard can be obtained from your local Standards Australia office.

Are powder coatings classified as dangerous goods?

FAQ
Powder Coatings are not classified dangerous goods. There are no solvents in powder coatings which simplifies the transport and storage of powder coatings.
