I don't have a date for the last use of wood over the Sierra. I do know that SP was still using wood fuel on the Siskiyou route into the 20th century. On 4-8-0s, no less. There are several well-known photos of a head-on wreck involving two 4-8-0s and a 4-6-0. The photos were taken by a Carmel photographer who happened to be on the passenger train. Often misdated, the photos were taken in 1901.

We don't think that there was a single CPRR corporate logo – railroad corporate logo's were not widely or consistently used prior to the 1890's. Any type of wood or wood waste can be used as boiler fuel, but fuels over 55% moisture are more difficult to burn and can be problematic. The best fuels are the driest, as they burn well and typically produce the least air pollution, and usually require the least energy input to produce a given unit of heat or energy. Fuels up to 65% moisture will burn and produce limited energy. With a fuel moisture content of 55% and below combustion is more efficient and boilers will run with less attention.

I used white spirit/Coleman fuel. Though my stove was capable of using kerosene and gasoline. Only once was I unable to obtain spirits, and then I was able to use gasoline for a brief period until I could get some spirit fuel. THE DRAWBAR PULL, or traction, of your locomotive is affected by its weight, contact with the rail, traction tires, motor and the power available. This pulling power is measured in pounds and ounces at the rear coupler or drawbar of your locomotive. DRAG OF YOUR CARS depends on the number of axles, lubrication of the bearings and if there are track pickups on any of the wheels. The weight of the car is also a factor. RADIUS OF THE TRACK CURVES is an important factor.
