What causes the excesive wear on a Tiger's rear brake pad ?

FAQ
Occasionally, a few Tigers comes from the factory with too little free play at the rear brake lever. When the bike is cold, the lever appears to have enough freeplay. However, when the pads/discs/fluid warms after a few applications, the fluid expands, pushes the master cylinder piston back, which uses up all the free play... . The rear master cylinder piston can't move any further, so the caliper piston obligingly moves for it, and the pads start dragging on the disc.

What causes PAD?

Peripheral Arterial Disease of the Legs, SVCMC; New York NY
The most common cause is the buildup of plaque on the inside of arteries. Plaque is made of extra cholesterol, calcium, and other material in your blood. Over time, plaque builds up along the inner walls of the arteries, including those that supply blood to your legs. If plaque builds up in your arteries, there is less room for blood to flow. Every part of your body needs blood that is rich in oxygen.

What brake pad materials are available?

Brembo Frequently Asked Questions
The pads that are provided with Brembo brake systems are high performance pads that offer a very broad temperature and performance range. The pads are effective at cold temperatures as well as the higher temperatures seen during performance driving. These pads are suited to high performance street driving, and limited track usage.

Is a rear brake needed?

Frequently Asked Questions
There is no rear brake on the TerraTrike. The significant forward weight transfer under hard braking causes the rear end to lift enough to make the rear brake almost superfluous. So the extra cost and weight is not justified. The front discs are more than adequate for stopping power and there is no chance of forward flipping a trike.

What causes a spongy pedal after the brake system has been bled several times?

Bendix :: Tech Corner : Tech Bulletins / FAQ
A spongy pedal is an indication that air is still present in the brake system. Follow proper brake bleeding procedures and sequences. Use a plastic mallet to lightly tap hydraulic components to help free entrapped air bubbles from inner walls of calipers and wheel cylinders.

What causes brake dust?

Powerstop Brakes Ltd
lower cost brake pads wear or carbonise at temperatures found in braking, dust is released. Many pad manufacturers use materials that cause dust in their pads. EBC Greenstuff contains NONE of these, hence pads run cleaner. Greenstuff pads do not surface carbonise until 900-1000°F so in normal use dust is almost entirely eliminated. Any dust that is generated in performance use is easily wiped / washed away without damage to alloy wheels.

What causes brake squeal?

Powerstop Brakes Ltd
On the occasions it occurs it is usually in older systems (say pre 1990). It can be caused by new pads being overheated when new - the binding resins in the friction compound lift to the surface, glaze the pad and the points of squeal can be seen as polished areas. Remedy - deglaze the pad by flatting off say 0.5-1.00mm on a medium/fine abrasive paper. Then clean the disc similarly (or use wire wool/brake cleaner fluid) with a stroking motion following the 'grain' of the disc.

REAR SETS: How do attach the return spring to my Vortex brake lever?

Vortex Racing Components- Sprockets, Chains, Frame sliders, ...
The return spring has been carried over from the older drum-style brake systems. Though most bikes have hydraulic brakes that render the return spring useless, there is still a law requiring factories to install this spring. Therefore, you do not need to use your return spring with Vortex Rear Sets.

What is the difference between the sintered and ceramic brake pad compounds?

Welcome To FTM Enterprises
Ceramic brake pads are designed for non-competition general use. Sintered brake pads are specifically designed for racing purposes. Ceramic pads provide consistent stopping power yet are designed to be "easy" on OEM rotors. Sintered pads have a high coefficient of friction to provide high initial bite and maximum stopping power. Sintered pads are generally more expensive than ceramic pads and typically wear faster than non-competition pads.

they wear out, and what causes them to wear out?

Suspension FAQs
Ball joints are typically what they sound like: a metal ball pressed into a socket, usually filled with grease. A ball joint is used to join together two moving components that don't necessarily move in the same direction, hence the ball design to allow for compound movement (other than just up-down or side-to-side). In your case, the ball joints in question connect the lower "control arm" to the bottom of your strut housing.
