The basic training course of 50 lessons is fundamental. We have a Black Belt Program that takes app. 300 to 360 one-on-one lessons to reach the Black Belt as a student. This means if you were to come twice per week it would take almost 3 years to achieve your Black Belt. ITC follows the International Taekwon-Do Federation syllabus for grading of our students and instructors. All beginners will start as white belts and we will guide you through the syllabus to prepare you for your exams. Grading for color belts is held four times per year (March, June, September, and December), and grading for black belts is held twice a year. To pass the exams, you will need to learn all the components of the syllabus for your class/grade.

Like most things, the more time you put into training, the faster you progress. There is no set time frame, but depending on the frequency and intensity of your training it could take anywhere from 3 to 5 years. Students are permitted to test for kyu ranks (degrees under black belt) whenever they feel comfortable with their current requirements, as there is no set time in grade until you reach black belt. The time it takes to earn a black belt largely depends on factors such as individual ability and frequency of training. Roughly, students who train regularly at LVTKD take minimum of 6 years. If students do not train regularly, it will naturally take much longer to earn a black belt. You should not be, however, caught up with the idea of a black belt. Rank does not and should not matter to a true martial artist. A black belt is nothing but a milestone in your training.

There are many things to be learned from the Karate Connection, once you have achieved a Black Belt. Things, that are not required to become an IKCA Black Belt. These things are also not required to attain degrees in Black Belt with the IKCA, they are optional. These are subjects that our students have requested further knowledge in and we are happy to oblige. This is generally done on a student-by-student basis.

At Shitokai Scotland we like to believe that everyone who trains with adequate commitment is capable of becoming a black belt. Some will be able to do this more quickly than others, very few who stay the course and train hard never make it.

Yes. They can receive a junior division black belt, which requires a reduced set of techniques as compared to the adult ranks. When junior black-belts, for example, are old enough to enter the adult classes they will enter as blue-belts.

Now there's a loaded question. Some people have moved from a "no nothing white belt" to an accomplished black belt in three years. Some have practiced for twenty five years before earning their black belt. Most lie somewhere in the middle, around four to eight years. It's amazing, but as you progress through the ranks, you'll actually find yourself putting off rank tests because you won't believe your ready. You may even need some prodding to keep moving along.

While this is very difficult to answer, very often people practicing sincerely for three or so days a week regulary and continuously often find that they've been conferred a black belt in approximately five years.
