It is theoretically possible to learn meditation from a book. However most people who teach and practice meditation agree that a teacher can be an invaluable aid in learning a meditation technique and making sure it is practiced correctly. The beginner will usually have several questions which a teacher will be able to answer. Also, learning with a group of people, eg a meditation class, allows you to experience the benefit of meditating with a group of people.

Instructors are addressed as "Sensei". Sensei is a Japanese title of respect (sort of like "Sir" or "Mister"). It means "teacher" and is literally translated as "before birth" which infers that the instructor is someone older than yourself. In this case we are speaking of "karate age". In other words, an instructor is someone who has more karate experience than yourself.

Self-teaching is crucial as well through your own observations, practice, modifications & application. A good teacher will guide, support, encourage and motivate their students to explore their own paths in music but with the fundamentals firmly in place so as to not cause injury or limit playing ability later on.

To teach general studies in Ontario's publicly funded schools you need an acceptable postsecondary degree, which is at least three years of full-time study, and one year of full-time study (or equivalent) in an acceptable teacher education program.

Like the students, teachers may have a slightly different schedule each day. If students need assistance they will need to set up an appointment either by e-mail or phone to meet with their teacher. Teachers' posted office hours are listed on their virtual office.
