How do I change the BIOS boot order so that My PC will boot from a CDROM or a floppy disk?

MESH Computers QC Report
Turn the PC on and immediately start tapping the DELETE or DEL key. Keep tapping this (approx 2/3 times a second will suffice) until a menu appears. This is the BIOS. Use the LEFT/RIGHT arrow keys on the keyboard to move along the upper menu until you highlight BOOT. The boot device list will appear (There may be a pause before this list appears) Press the + (Plus symbol) on the keypad (far right on keyboard) to move the ATAPI CD-ROM or floppy disk heading up the list. I have an IDE LS-120 floppy drive; how do I configure it in the BIOS?

PREMIO Computer, Inc. -- PREMIO 820S (6301) FAQ / BIOS / Dri...
If you do not have a regular 3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive installed, then go into the BIOS, Standard CMOS Setup, and set "Floppy Drive A:" to Not Installed. Next, also in Standard CMOS Setup, you need to set the drive type to FLOPTICAL. For example, if the LS-120 drive is installed on the secondary IDE channel as a slave device, then set the Sec Slave option in the BIOS to FLOPTICAL. See similar questions...

Is there any way to use my floppy drive if it's not attached during boot?

General Questions
Sure. You need to add "flags 0x20" at the end of the fd* entry and recompile your kernel. The line should be read: fd* at fdc? drive ? flags 0x20 After that you would be able to use the floppy drive all the times. It doesn't matter if you plugged it in after boot. For most people, you won't have to do anything here. It will automatically boot if no commands are given. But sometimes problems arise, or special functions are needed. That's where these options will come in handy. See similar questions...

Why can't I read floppy disks directly via my PC floppy drive?

Red Squirrel - Acorn Archimedes and RiscPC Emulator
Because it doesn't work yet. RedSquirrel is a Win32 application and as such is restricted to using the Win32 API. Windows doesn't support anything other than 512byte blocks on floppy/hard disks and Acorn disks use 1024 byte blocks. There are two ways around this, neither are pretty and neither work under Windows 2000. I had a half hearted attempt at writing a VXD to give me bios access but it hasn't been entirely successful. I will try again soon. See similar questions...

What Is A Floppy Drive?

PC Basics
A floppy disk drive is an economical, removable storage medium. It uses a magnetic disk. You can record or erase it and then remove it from the computer. You can use the removable disk repeatedly. Today's floppy is 3.5 inches of square, stiff plastic with a magnetic disk inside. It is called a floppy because the original disk, way back when, was large and floppy like a hound dog's ear. The term "floppy" is still with us. See similar questions...

Can I boot from a USB flash drive (memory key)?

Unattended, A Windows deployment system: Frequently Asked Qu...
I got this working on a 256M Sandisk Cruzer Mini, but the procedure should be the same for any USB drive. I used a Linux machine to prep the drive. You can probably use a Windows machine to do all of this stuff; if you figure it out, feel free to let us know and we will update these instructions. First, I needed to repartition and reformat the drive, because the original partition table was an unholy mess which confused the boot loader. See similar questions...

Why does my busTRACE USB Flash Drive cause my system to hang during Windows boot?

busTRACE 5.0 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
This is a conflict between some system BIOSes and the SanDisk Cruzer Micro flash drive. It is not related to the busTRACE software. If your system exhibits this problem, the system might appear to hang during Windows boot when you have our dongle (i.e. SanDisk Cruzer Micro) installed in a USB port. If you remove the dongle, the system continues to boot just fine. You can plug the dongle back in and everything works fine. See similar questions...

I can't get my floppy drive going, is there another method to install?

Frequently asked question about the Linux floppy driver
You may also install via hard disk and initrd. You need a big enough hard disk to do this (and it takes a little bit more time than the usual method). The following method presumes that it is possible to access the disk using DOS. Leave a small DOS partition (with enough spare space to hold the tar files from a few install disks). The bigger that partition is, the less come and goes from DOS are needed later. However, the bigger it is, the less space is available for Linux itself. See similar questions...
