First, you will want to find the map using Google's Satellite interface. Search for the location in the location bar, and move the map around until you find a good shot. You will now see that the URL is updated in the Location bar in your browser. Technically, no, but there's a practical limit. As the number of markers increase, so does the time required for the web browser to process them. The GPS receiver is not required, although it helps a lot to pinpoint the exact location. If you do not have a GPS and cannot borrow one, make sure you have a very detailed map of the area, a good compass, and good navigation skills. I actually used a script that I wrote myself to digitise my route. It displays a Google map, and when I click on the map, it displays the longitude and latitude of the resulting point in a format I can copy out and paste into a text file. I then apply a few regular expressions to the file, and out pops a Google Maps XML file, as well as a Google Earth KML file.
