The choice over whether to divide large plants really depends on your growing goals and situation. You may wish to grow the plant into a larger 'specimen plant' that will produce larger and more flowers reliably, or you may want to produce divisions for trade or sale if the plant is in demand. Because most of our plants 'work by producing seed, we are very hesitant to divide them unless they fall apart at a division point when they are repotted.

To a certain extent, determining pot size will take into consideration your growing conditions, potting medium and watering habits, but as a general rule you do not want to over pot Paphs, as this leads frequently to root loss over time. Rather pot them so that the roots just comfortably fit into the pot, like a hat on your head: snug enough to stay on but not uncomfortably tight. The other consideration in a pot for Paphs is that it have sufficient drainage.

Hostas do not need regular division to keep them vigorous. Hostas can be left undisturbed indefinitely, but when division is necessary, divide in the spring just as the plant pips are emerging from the ground, so the new foliage is not damaged. If the plants are left undivided, you can enjoy their mature beauty sooner; otherwise, the plant will take longer to become fully mature.

Successful planting can take place any time of the year; however, there are advantages and disadvantages to every season. Fall and winter planting require less watering and are less stressful on plants due to the fact that plants are entering dormancy. The availability of some types of plants, such as trees, is also at its peak in fall and winter. The warmer ground and wet weather of spring are also ideal for planting.

In either early Spring or throughout the Fall. The reason is that the soil temperature is low and the tree's roots can easily acclimate to the new soil where it will live for the rest of its life without stress. It takes about 30-45 days for a tree to root-in and begin living on its own without the additional care required to sustain its life. If a drought would occur, a minimum of 25 gallons or 1" of water would be required per tree per week to keep them alive.

You have to be patient when the plant you purchased in flower is done flowering, because it needs to mature another growth before it can flower again, unless it is a sequential bloomer from the section Cochlopetalum (see following paragraph). Your plant will also take a bit of time to adjust to your growing conditions, and your potting medium if you choose to repot it after flowering (which is always a good idea).

The short answer to this question is an easy one: you repot the plant when it needs it, whether it's spring, summer, winter or fall. Unquestionably, ideal times for repotting are when the weather is going to be warm for some time to encourage new growth, but if the plant needs repotting, it's best not to postpone it. The best time to divide perennials depends on your climate. Here in Montana, it's usually mid to late April and early fall, from late August through September. In colder climates, spring division is preferred because it allows plants plenty of time to settle in before winter. In hot-summer climates, fall is the best time to divide; plants divided in spring may not become established before the arrival of the heat. A few plants insist on their own timetable.

The ideal time to plant trees is during the trees' dormant season, after leaf drop in the fall and before bud break in the spring.

Basically, you can plant bamboo any time you can work the soil. We have done most of our planting from November through March; however, we have planted in every month of the year with success.

Potted citrus trees can be planted almost anytime of the year. Fall and Spring are two of the better times. Since newly planted citrus trees are not as cold hardy as more mature ones, Fall planting should be done at least two (2) months before freezing temperatures can be expected.

Clyde Robin. In temperate zones, it is best to plant in the fall just prior to the first rains. In areas that get hard winter freezes it is best to wait until the spring and after danger of heavy frost has passed. .

Palm trees like to be transplanted when they are actively growing. Spring and summer are best but some varieties can be planted all year.

June is a great month to plant trees, shrubs and groundcovers. Pay close attention to their watering requirements because their root systems will be in the original soil ball of the plant for the first several months. Note that these plants may require an occasional hand watering until they begin to establish.
