The timeframe for completion of the joint PhD is related to the field of study. Five years is a target goal for some fields, but it may take longer. Only five years of funding are guaranteed.

The Master of Science program usually requires between two to three semesters (24 units of course work) and a report and presentation. A thesis plan (20 units of course work) for the Master of Science degree is also possible. There is no formula for degrees, and times can vary greatly. A "typical" MS student starts in fall of year Y, takes two semesters of course work and begins working on a thesis in summer of Y+1, then completes two more courses and the thesis by the end of spring Y+2, or (frequently) early summer Y+2.
