There are many factors that affect each Interlibrary Loan transaction however, for the majority of items it generally takes 5 – 7 days. Locally held materials may arrive sooner. More obscure material may take longer. YOU CAN SPEED the processing of your request by filling out the Interlibrary Loan Request form completely and accurately. If you have a deadline, be sure to put the latest possible date you can still use the material on the request form.

It generally takes 4-5 business days for the material to arrive, although it may take longer if the item is difficult to obtain. You are encouraged to check with the library after 4-5 business days to see if your material has arrived. If the library does not hear from you it will notify you by phone or e-mail that your inter-library loan request has arrived.

On average it takes approximately two weeks to fill an ILL request, though it can take as little as three days or as long as a month or more to receive materials, depending on the location and the availability of the item at other libraries. For books, whenever possible, we will try to locate the item at a local library and have it delivered to us by courier. For journal articles, whenever possible, we will have the article transmitted electronically to eliminate the delay of mail service.

Books generally take 1-2 weeks. Books must be picked up at the ILL office and returned to the ILL office in the Medical Center Library.

It all depends upon the policies of the institution that lent the item to us. We need to abide by the due dates that they have imposed. The average loan period is 3 weeks for books.

There is no standard due date for ILL items as the library that lends the material specifies the date. On average, items may be kept for three weeks. The due date will be printed on the book's ILL label. Patrons are responsible for the safe and on-time return of items borrowed through ILL. Failure to return items obtained through ILL in a prompt manner will result in the loss of your ILL privileges.

Journal articles generally take 1-3 days if they can be obtained locally, and up to week (5-7 days) if they have to be sent out of the region. Non-medical related journal articles will take longer to obtain. To help you get the material that you need as quickly as possible, provide as complete citation as possible when ordering materials.

We use the WorldCat online database, containing the holdings of nearly 9,000 libraries worldwide, to locate and request most materials. Some items, such as dissertations, patents, and other specialized materials, are available through document suppliers and from other sources.

Interlibrary Loan articles generally take 7 to 10 days to reach the Biomedical Library, but frequently take less time. There is no way to predict how long a given item will take, so it is always important to plan ahead when using ILL. Document Delivery generally takes between 24 to 48 hours for desktop or fax delivery. Mail delivery obviously takes longer. In both cases books will generally take longer as they must be sent by mail.

All books are loaned for a period of at least two weeks. Your book will be held in the ILL office for two weeks after we notify you. If you do not pick it up, it will be shipped back to the lending library at the end of those two weeks. The Medical Library has cooperative sharing agreements with thousands of libraries around the country. Interlibrary loan, or ILL, is a process by which libraries lend materials to each other. When you need a book or journal article, you request an ILL, and our Interlibrary loan staff make arrangements to have the materials sent here from any one of thousands of libraries. We first attempt to find a library in the Boston area with which we share materials regularly.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) offers Library customers the opportunity to request and receive books that are not owned by Jacksonville Public Library (JPL).
