Wireless access points operate within the 2.4GHz frequency range and are prone to interference from microwave ovens, other unknown access points in the area, some cordless phones and many other environmental factors that may be passing between you and the access point at any given time. Though the wireless protocol was designed to be robust, it is still radio frequency, and it can be interrupted by various pieces of equipment and/or structures.

It depends. Many factors may affect wireless connections (walls, desks, large metal objects, etc.). However, there are other devices that operate in the same 2.4GHz frequency range that can disrupt wireless connections. The largest offenders are 2.4GHz wireless telephones (but not cell phones), microwave ovens, etc.

Even though wireless networks look attractive for use everywhere, wired networks still give the best performance and speed. In general, a wireless connection works like a wired Ethernet connection. Wireless connection speeds may be up to 54 megabits per second, but the actual throughput is roughly half the connection speed. Also this bandwidth is shared among all users connected via wireless in a given area.

The WestConn wireless network is part of a DMZ network. Wireless users will only be able to access items on the University network similar to when they connect to the internet from home. Some services that are known to have security issues have been blocked. Please note that wireless service is not intended to replace the University wired network.

There are several reasons why the wireless connection is slower than a wired connection. First, the technology itself is slower, 11 Mbps shared for the wireless versus 10/100 Mbps dedicated for most wired connections. Second, RUWireless uses a QOS bandwidth limitation to provide a fair level of service to all users, else it would be possible for a single user to sit very close to an access point and "hog" all the bandwidth.

Will wireless devices be able to communicate to the alarm panel? Plaster walls with metal lathe in them can block the wireless signals. quot;Just as fast" is a vague term. It could be that for simple operations, like browsing web pages, that the wireless network will be just as fast as the wired network, but there is much more bandwidth available to the wired network than the wireless one.

The kind of network you install in your home is a personal choice. Each type of home network functions very well when installed correctly. Ethernet(wired) is easier to set up, cheaper and generally provides the highest speeds, but wireless(802.11-based) networking provides more mobility and flexibility of PC location. Powerline (wired networking using your home's outlets) is an appealling compromise between complexity and portability.
