The leaves are basically sugar factories for the plant. They act as a solar panel taking in the light combining it with water and C02 to make usable sugars. Then they send these sugars down to the roots when the roots combine these sugars with oxygen it converts it into usable energy for the plant. The more oxygen to the roots, the more energy it can transfer to the plant.

The appearance of black areas on the surface of the leaves, following a hot sunny day may be the result of sunburn. Exposure to direct mid-afternoon sunlight during the late spring through early fall will scorch the leaves of some orchids. Increase the shading or move the plant to a less sunny location. Wrinkled or pleated leaves are caused by a lack of moisture reaching the vegetative part of the plant. This can be caused by not watering enough, or watering too much. If you can't figure out what you've done, tip the plant out of the pot and examine the roots. If they are white or tan, firm, and spread throughout the mix, you need to increase the frequency of watering. Almost all orchids drop leaves as they grow. Phalaenopsis plants bottom leaves will turn yellow and fall off when it starts to produce new growth. there is nothing you can do for leaves already turned brown. Brown leaves are dead leaves. If the brown leaves seem scattered throughout the plant then it could be an insect or mite infestation. If whole plants or whole sides of plants are dying then it will most likely be a problem within the roots. If the leaves are going brown in the upper canopy it could be that the lights are too close. This is often normal near the end of a plant’s life. It is usually caused by the lower leaves being shaded. The plant removes the nutrients from the leaves for use elsewhere causing them to turn yellow.
