What is a UBI and how do I get one?

Bidding Opportunities
In January 1987, several Washington State agencies that work with the business community joined together to launch the Unified Business Identifier (UBI) program. A UBI number is a nine-digit number that is assigned to your business when you apply for a business license through the Master License Service of the Department of Licensing or register with the Departments of Revenue, Labor and Industries, Employment Security, or the Secretary of State.

Why does UBI need two headers, not just one?

Memory Technology Device (MTD) Subsystem for Linux.
UBI maintains two per-eraseblock headers because it needs to write different information on flash at different moments of time: after a PEB is erased, the EC header is written straight away, which minimizes the probability of losing the erase counter due to an unclean reboot; When the EC header is written to a PEB, UBI does not yet know the volume ID and LEB number this PEB will be associated with. This is why UBI needs to do two write operations and to have two headers. See similar questions...

Do I need a Washington Unified Business Identifier (UBI)?

FAQ
A UBI number is a nine-digit number that is assigned to identify the ownership and ownership structure of your business when you apply for a business license. A UBI number is not required to register to receive bid notifications from the vendor registration system. However, a UBI number is required to conduct business with any agent of the State of Washington. Please see RCW 39.06.10. See similar questions...

What for does UBI need headers in physical eraseblocks?

Memory Technology Device (MTD) Subsystem for Linux.
The headers are needed to keep track of erase counters and physical-to-logical eraseblock associations. There are two UBI headers stored in each PEB: Note, there are also some other data stored in EC and VID headers, see mtd/ubi-header.h for more details. See similar questions...

How can I find UBI source?

Memory Technology Device (MTD) Subsystem for Linux.
UBI is now in mainline kernel - it was pulled by Linus after 2.6.21 was released, so one can find it in later kernels. There is also an UBI development tree available at git://git.infradead.org/home/dedekind/ubi-2.6.git. User-space UBI utilities are available at the mtd-utils git repository ( git://git.infradead.org/mtd-utils.git). There is also a bunch of UBI tests in this repository. See similar questions...

How to enable UBI?

Memory Technology Device (MTD) Subsystem for Linux.
In the linux configuration menu, go to "Device Drivers" -> "Memory Technology Devices (MTD)" -> "UBI - Unsorted block images", and mark the "Enable UBI" check-box. UBI may be either compiled into the kernel or built as a kernel module. See similar questions...

How to debug UBI?

Memory Technology Device (MTD) Subsystem for Linux.
When debugging UBI you don't have to use a real embedded platform and real flash. You may use a PC with an MTD device emulator and run UBI on top of this emulated MTD device. For example, to get a 32MiB fake NOR flash, run "modprobe mtdram total_size=32768" or if you need a 64MiB fake NAND flash, run "modprobe nandsim second_id_byte=0x36". To ensure that you have fake MTD devices, run "cat /prof/mtd". See similar questions...

Do I need to look for my X number?

Backstreets.com: FAQ List
Well, it helps us if you do, and it helps keep you from missing an issue. So it's a win-win. Unlike most larger, consumer magazines, Backstreets does not have the resources to continually bombard subscribers with renewal mailings, so it really helps if subscribers take note of their expiration issue. Since Backstreets carries very little paid advertising, subscription revenue is the only real support the magazine has. See similar questions...

Do I have to format my empty flash before running UBI on top of it?

Memory Technology Device (MTD) Subsystem for Linux.
No, you don't have to. Although UBI stores some internal information, you may feed it an empty MTD device and UBI will format it automatically. The resulting MTD device will have all the internal data in place and no user volumes. Note, "empty flash" means that it has to contain only 0xFF bytes, i.e., to be fully erased. You may use the flash_eraseall MTD utility to wipe out MTD devices. See similar questions...
