Why do rhinos have horns?

SOS Rhino
The horns are very well developed in the two species in Africa (black and white rhinos), but much smaller in the three species in Asia (Sumatran with 2 very small horns, Indian and Javan with one horn). The Asian species certainly do not use the horns to fight or to defend themselves, they use their incisors (sharp front teeth for the purpose). The horns have come about in evolution and they had (have) a general function to impress members of the opposite sex.

Do rhinos have teeth?

SOS Rhino
All rhinos, those from Asia as well as Africa, have teeth in the sides of their jaws, called premolars and molars. The Asian species of rhinoceros also show well-developed front teeth. In fact, the incisors of the Indian Rhinoceros are its main means of defence, much more dangerous than the horn on the nose. See similar questions...

Ewes horns: Do all Soay ewes have horns? Are all British Soay ewes horned?

Southern Oregon Soay Sheep Farms: Frequently Asked Questions
Only one third of the ewes on Hirta are horned; the remainder are either polled or scurred. (It is generally accepted that a scurred animal carries less than 50% of normal horns, which can mean it has very small horns or just small stumps. A polled animal has no sign of horn what so ever.) Historically Soay ewes brought to the mainland from Soay were selectively bred for horns. This has led many to the mistaken conclusion that all true Soay ewes are horned. See similar questions...

Do rhinos really stomp out fires?

SOS Rhino
A:There are quite a number of legends about the rhinoceros stamping out fire. The story seems to have been common in Malaysia and Burma. This type of rhinoceros even had a special name in Malay, 'badak api', where badak means rhinoceros and api means fire. The animal would come when a fire is lit in the forest and stamp it out. If there is or can be any truth in the legend, it would be hard to decide. Suffice it to say that there has been no sighting of this phenomenon in recent history. See similar questions...

Also, did Stanleys have horns and if so, what did the horns sound like?

Frequently Asked Stanley Questions from emails
Contrary to popular belief, no Stanley steam car shipped from the factory ever had a steam whistle. In fact the steam whistle is a modern addition to a Stanley. The early cars had reed-trumpet horns on them. These were long, coiled, tapered, brass resonators not unlike a trombone or trumpet with a 4" rubber bulb at the small end. Also inside the small end was a little brass reed kind of like a duck call reed (the same principal that is employed with a clarinet or oboe). See similar questions...
