A double major is when a student pursues two major fields of study. These fields can be from the same college (finance and marketing) or from two different colleges (finance and economics.) Students must complete all degree requirements for both fields to graduate with a double major.

Undergraduate students may apply to only one program at a time. You may declare your double major once you have been admitted. To do so, you will need to complete a Declaration of Major or Minor form at the SDSU Office of the Registrar and obtain department approval. If you declare a second major in an impacted program, you will need to fulfill the impaction criteria set by the department before being admitted to that major.

A double major means that a student receives one diploma that covers two majors. Students who choose two majors in business, such as finance and management, will receive only one diploma but both major fields of study will be noted on the transcript. A dual degree means that a student receives two diplomas for two majors. Students must earn a minimum of 150 credit hours, 90 of which are junior/senior-level, to meet dual degree requirements.

You may earn more than one degree in any fields you like. Consult the Web site on changing majors for instructions on declaring additional majors and minors. Keep in mind that some programs have very different requirements and will add quite a bit more time to your graduation date. It is a good idea before planning the two majors to talk with your academic advisor. In many cases, it is more useful to earn one bachelors degree and then go to graduate school for an advanced degree.
