BOB: Since Hurricane Katrina, people have been concerned about Formosan termites arriving locally in mulch products. After all they say, Formosan termites don't need soil to survive, they only need wood and a source of water. On the other hand, most experts feel the Formosan termites can't survive outside the southern climes.

Maybe/probably/depends. This is very dependent on the area of your building site. If termites are a concern for conventional buildings in your area then they are a concern with ICF construction. While termites don't feed on EPS like they do wood, they can tunnel through EPS to reach a food source.

Merrifield Garden Center's mulch, and other mulches made from the bark of a tree as opposed to the tree itself, does not have termites. Termites must have proper temperature and humidity to survive and they have only one reproductive queen in each colony. If a reproductive queen were to survive the debarking, shredding, double shredding, transport and delivery, which is nearly impossible, she would starve upon arrival. Termites feed on cellulose, which is found in wood, not in the bark.

Actually, you may be more at risk than many other types of homes. As mentioned above, termites can enter through very small cracks in concrete or mortar. Brick homes usually have brick down to the ground or below ground level. Behind the brick is a 1" inch gap known as a weep gap. This is there to allow moisture toescape from behind the wall. The problem is, if termites find a tiny crack in the mortar around the brick & get into this weep gap area they go undetected.

Once a colony is established, termites are a year-round problem. However, there is an increase in colony expansion activity during warm weather.

Termites are small insects that are capable of eating and digesting wood and wood products. Termites are very beneficial in Nature. These insects are part of God's recycling program for dead wood. A dead tree in the woods becomes new organic material in the soil thanks to termites. We tested 27 mulches in the field, and found that some supported more artillery fungus than others. In this study, resistant mulch was the large pine bark nuggets. The large bark nuggets stay hard and dry, conditions that the artillery fungus does not like. Cypress mulch also performed well, as it probably contains some anti-fungal, anti-decay chemical(s).

Interestingly, homeowners that put down new mulch each year generally have less of the artillery fungus problem. But, we have not confirmed this practice. But it does seem to work. Don't miss a year!

You really need to ask this question to a compost expert, but most good mulch today is composted to some degree. However, I would insist on a thoroughly composted mulch.

Granular fertilizers are more persistent in the soil; they are absorbed more slowly and last longer. They can be incorporated into the soil at planting or they can also be broadcast onto the surface of the soil of existing plants. Super phosphate, frequently lacking in western soils, is essential for plentiful flowers and strong root growth. Grow Power is an excellent all-purpose fertilizer especially for lawns. It should be worked into the soil when planting turf and ornamental grasses.
