Should dryer lint be put out for birds' nesting material?
Birdfeeding.orgDryer lint isn't recommended for nesting materials because it can contain synthetic fibers not good for the birds. Also, the lint tends to be porous and will stay damp long after it's rained on in the nest. Cotton thread and yarn, not longer than 6 to 8 inches, work well as do feathers from an old down pillow and butcher's twine. You always must leave a nest alone if it contains eggs from a native bird species.
I've read where it helps to put nesting material out for the birds. Does this really help?
A Bird's HomeAbsolutely. I do and a lot of other landlords I know also do it. There are a number of different materials that can be used. Two that I highly recommend are Pine Straw (dried pine needles) and Wheat Straw. Both are usually available just about anywhere at garden shops and Co-ops. Others are available, but make sure that whatever you use doesn't get wet and stay wet. The parent birds won't stay in a nest that stays wet. The two I mentioned will quickly drain off any moisture should they get wet. See similar questions...

I have birds nesting above my front door and they are making a mess. What can I do?
BRC-FAQWait until the babies have fledged. Then remove the nests and devise some sort of barrier (i.e., rolled chicken wire) to prevent future nesting. DO NOT disturb the nest! Remember it is illegal. First, go up on the roof and cover the skylight completely with an opaque cloth which will completely block the light. Next, determine if the bird is a diurnal hawk (active during the day) or a nocturnal owl (active at night). See similar questions...
How can I stop birds nesting in the chimney?
Martin Pesani, Professional Chimney SweepBirds nesting, especially Jackdaws, can be a problem. More so the nearer you get to the countryside. There are companies who make purpose built bird guards. These should always be used in preference to putting chicken wire on the pot. Proper bird guards are strong enough to withstand any efforts from the birds to pull them off. See similar questions...

How can I keep other birds from nesting in my bluebird house?
DPNC - Frequently Asked QuestionsEnglish sparrows commonly intrude upon bluebird boxes. They are serious competitors and sometimes predators of bluebirds. We did a nest check and found nesting material in some compartments, but no eggs. Is this normal?
A Bird's HomeAlthough not always, when you find a nest that doesn't contain any eggs, it is probably the work of a lone male. Many times single males (called floaters) are known to build a partial nest in the hopes of attracting a female. If they end up not pairing up, then the result is an 'almost complete' nest, but no eggs. Pay attention to the nest. If you see only one bird hanging out there, then more than likely the empty nest is the work of a floater. See similar questions...
Birds are nesting in my roof and keeping me awake. Can I have them removed?

You may be able to obtain a special licence if the birds are causing a genuine health or safety risk. See similar questions...
Can my visits to the nest harm the birds or interfere with the nesting attempt?
Project NestWatch - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)This is unlikely if you are cautious while moving around the nest. Observers often fear that increased predation may result from the observer leaving a track or scent-trail to nests but recent studies have shown that nests visited frequently had a similar rate of success to others left undisturbed between laying and fledging. Birds, unlike many mammals which have a good sense of smell, will continue to care for their young after being disturbed. See similar questions...

My zebras have buried their eggs beneath more nesting material! What should I do?
Finch Aviary - Care - Finch FAQThis is not uncommon behavior for zebra finches. First wash your hands (bacteria can be spread when you touch the eggs). Remove additional nesting material so they are not tempted to bury the eggs again. See similar questions...
Birds keep making nests in my dryer vent. How can I keep them out?

back] I want to put a nesting box in the cage, but the birds flip out whenever I try. What do I do?
Parakeet FAQ: Frequently Asked parakeet questionsBirds flip out when you put new stuff in their cage because they are scared of it. I've had pretty good success with putting something in the cage really slowly. Once it's in, I will tie millet spray with twist ties to it. They love millet sprays. it's a great parakeet treat. After a while they will explore the new thing only because they are dying to get to the treat. Leave it in the cage for a few days/weeks and they will get used to it. See similar questions...
