June in Michigan is a lovely month. In the past we've had a scorching heat wave, a year when it never went above 63 degrees F (blame the volcano), two tornadoes (same year, we were evacuated from our rooms twice in two days) with a lightning strike, and 8 other years when the weather was pretty darn near perfect - in the mid 70's to mid 80's, sunny or only mild rain, lows in the high 60's to 70. Summer weather is highlighted by the persistent tradewinds which occur about 90% of the time. These winds blowing from the northeast provide a cooling breeze accompanied by the occasional shower. The showers that occur tend to be brief and light in nature and confined to the windward, or east, sides of the islands and near the mountains. Michigan has four seasons. Winter is very cold and can get down to 0F (-18C). Spring can sometimes be rainy and have temperatures from 40 – 70F (4 - 21C). Summer is very hot and the temperatures range from 75 – 95F (24 - 35C). Fall is sometimes windy and it can be about 30 – 50F (-1 - 10C). Fall is lovely. The first snowfall is usually in early November, and winter weather usually lasts until mid-March. Temperatures are coldest in January and February, usually ranging from the mid-30s to the single digits. Snowfalls are not particularly heavy. We have a number of students from southern states who have successfully learned to drive in the snow! Hot, with occasional showers. June is the beginning of the rainy season in Grand Cayman, but that usually means sunny days with brief tropical showers. There are often thunderstorms over Cuba, but, as in the U.S., it's quite easy to deviate around them. Cuban controllers are very helpful, in allowing deviations. According to Promperú, the driest months are from May to September, the winter months in the Southern hemisphere. Temperatures can fall below freezing above 4500m, and it may be windy from August onwards. During the spring, September to December, there are likely to be early afternoon showers (sometimes accompanied by electrical storms) of short duration, and it may be cloudy and overcast. Ghana is very close to the equator, and so the weather is quite warm and tropical. There are two rainy seasons, one from April to June, and the other from September to October. This differs slightly from the more northern regions, but volunteers will most likely be stationed in the south.
