I can't open a file on my floppy disk, what can I do?
Adrian CollegeFirst, a note on prevention. Floppy disks are very sensitive to static electricity so carry your disks in a protective case (these are available at the bookstore and are fairly cheap), do not carry them in your pocket or just throw them in a backpack. If you are working on something very important, i.e. senior research project, 20-pg. paper, PowerPoint presentation, etc. make backup copies of your work.

Can I work from a floppy disk where I have copied my file?
My HeredisNo. You must first copy the file to your hard disk before opening it. The floppy disk is not a work space, only a storage area. If you work from the floppy, you will be taking a certain risk. If you cannot open the file once you have transferred it to your hard disk, this means that the file is incomplete (probably because there was not enough space on the floppy). The .bak files are duplicates of your genealogy files, created automatically by Heredis each time you save your file. See similar questions...
How can I read a floppy disk that was written on a Mac Plus?
Mini vMac FAQModern machines can’t read the 400k and 800k floppy disks used by the Mac Plus. This a hardware problem, not solvable in software - they lack the variable speed motor of the old drives. I don’t know any reason why some company couldn’t now manufacture a floppy drive that reads the old disks, but I’m not aware of anyone doing so. Q4. Why can't I format a floppy disk?
F.A.Q.Windows will refuse to format a disk that some program (as 2xExplorer) have a lock on. A certain recipe for disaster therefore would be to be browsing the root "A:\", and then hit <Bksp> to access "My Computer" folder where the floppy disk icon resides (bearing the Format context menu command), since 2xExplorer current directory would still be on the floppy (MyComputer is not a filesystem folder).
