You can import DVD-Video that you have authored with DVD authoring tools like Apple's iDVD, Microsoft's Windows DVD Maker, Pinnacle Studio 11, Nero Vision, Ulead DVD MovieFactory, Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 Suite, DVDit Pro, or DVD-Video that you have received from VHS-conversion services like YesDVD, or DVD-Video that you have created using a set-top DVD Recorder. Any Movie Player or Music Player can import content in DVD-Video format from DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs.

For family movies, 8mm film is an obsolete format. This format began in the late 1930’s so some films that we have transferred are well over 60 years old! All films are slowly deteriorating, but, if your films have been stored indoors, away from high heat and humidity, they are probably still in pretty good condition. What we normally see on family movies is that the films are changing color tones and fading.

If they are not subject to copyright, this should not be a problem, however the terms and conditions do not allow you to convert material that is subject to copyright.

There are many film-to-video copying services which specialise in transferring home movies on 8mm, Super 8, 9.5mm and 16mm onto modern videotape and DVD formats. They can generally be found in telephone directories under 'Video Services'.

There are several programs you can use to stream movies in the Archive. Because we allow users to upload video files in any format, the same player will not always work for every single file, so it's a good idea to have a couple of programs available that you can try. Also, some files simply can't be streamed. Usually, this happens when the program that created the video file uses a codec that our software doesn't understand.
