Vomiting has many different causes. Some of the more common are viral infection, food poisoning, alcohol overdose, alcoholic hangover, morning sickness, motion sickness, gastritis, and reactions to medications. Less common causes are kidney disease, gastrointestinal cancer, intestinal obstruction, concussion, diabetes, appendicitis, and various diseases of the internal organs.1 Gastritis is simply inflammation of the stomach.

Most phobics suffer terrible panic attacks when they have nausea or imagine that they do. These panic attacks are much worse for them than vomiting is for an ordinary person. Yet the act remains unthinkable. The phobia interferes with educations, careers, marriages, and family relationships. Many phobics take time away from work or school unnecessarily because they fear either vomiting themselves or being exposed to people who can pass germs that will cause them to vomit.

The phobics and non-phobics who answered the survey said their most recent attack of vomiting was caused by the following: In terms of lifetime causes of vomiting, that is, what has caused them to vomit in their entire lives. This is because many phobics are already around vomiters (usually their children; additionally, phobic health care workers are exposed to their patients, and phobic teachers are exposed to their students).

I find that my phobia has varied in intensity over the years. There was a time when I was about 16 that I thought I was cured; I hardly ever worried about vomiting and preventing it then. When I was 18, it came back suddenly and with a vengeance. It did not prevent me from doing things I wanted to do that fall starting college, however. My fear gradually eased to the point where I call myself close to being cured.

Shango would cast spells on jobbers he fought making ooz flow out of their boots as well as other things. On one television show, Papa Shango put a spell on Warrior making him throw up. Sometimes patients are nauseated and may vomit after surgery. This is most common with abdominal procedures, gynecologic surgery, and eye surgery. It is more common in women than men, and more common in people who are prone to motion sickness. We take numerous measures to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery, including using anesthetics that have an anti-nausea effect and administering anti-nausea medications before, during, and after surgery.

The fact most surprising to non-phobics is that the great majority of emetophobics rarely, if ever, vomit. An emetophobic is a person who has been in car collisions more often than they have vomited. Most phobics can count the number of times they have vomited on the fingers of one hand. Some emetophobics have survived pregnancy and childbirth, appendicitis, and gall bladder operations without as much as a single retch.

This is what some phobics have conjectured as to their great vomitory continence. The act of vomiting is controlled by the brain. Specifically, there is a vomiting center, located in the medulla oblongota of the brain. Vomiting is a more primitive function of the brain. Some phobics believe that as a result of years of fear and daily cogitation, the conscious part of their brain has overridden the vomiting center.

No! No! No! Nothing could be more destructive to the relationship between an emetophobic and their loved one than that. Some (not most) adult emetophobes say they developed emetophobia because their parents made them vomit at one time or another. There are even adult emetophobes who wound up worse than before when someone tried to "cure" them by infecting them or otherwise making them vomit.

These are not the expected outcomes, but they do occur. Call the Counselor if you experience vomiting or diarrhea frequently. Certain food can cause diarrhea. Yes, you can still vomit if, for example, you are sick, eat too fast or swallow poorly chewed foods.

Absolutely not! Just as not every person who feels faint will faint, not every instance of nausea will end with vomiting. Just as a yawn means "get some air" and dizziness means "stop moving around," nausea is the body saying "deal with the stimuli causing you to feel this way."

The stomach is relatively unimportant in the act of vomiting. The brain is in charge, and muscles adjacent to the stomach do the work. The vomiting center is located in the medulla oblongata, the rear part of the brain. This neural center acts on information supplied by the stomach, the intestines, the gag reflex in the throat, the inner ear, and most importantly, the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ), which is located on the floor of the fourth ventricle in the brain, in case anyone cares.
