Mushrooming of the wick caused by a carbon build up at the tip of the wick creates soot.. To prevent this from happening, do not burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. When the candle is cooled, turn it upside down and trim wick to a nub with scissors or clippers.

Soot is created when a flame exceeds 1 inch in length. Keep the wick trimmed to avoid such a high flame. The quality of wax will also determine how much soot a candle will produce. Scented Specialties uses only the finest premium wax blends ensuring one of the cleanest burns possible. Also, drafts cause candle flames to flicker and smoke is released when a flame is disturbed. Keep candles out of drafts. Scented Specialties recommends using some sort of "candle topper" with jar candles.

You can clean the glass using Dovre Glass Cleanser or any other glass cleaner. This must be done when the stove is cold. If heavy soot built-ups appear, use treble ammonia water to clean the glass. Soot may appear on the glass if the combustion temperature is too low or if the air controls are used incorrectly. Don’t use any scorchers which might damage the glass surface.

The stove needs to be cleaned up at least once a year. But naturally depending on how much the stove is used. The baffle is removed from the stove and cleaned up. Note that the stove must be cold when cleaned up. Remove all residue and ash from the inside. If the baffle is fixed clean on top of the baffle with something like a vacuum cleaner. If the temperature is too low you might experience tarry soot or creosote in your chimney. The combustion temperature will be too low if not enough air is supplied compared to the amount of wood. Tarry soot is easily recognized as a brown sticky coat. Supply more secondary air to increase the temperature. A stove pipe thermometer placed on the lower part of the flue pipe will indicate if the air supply is correct. The flue gas temperature must be approx. 250° C.

The stone is sealed with a siloxane based sealer that is invisible and prevents absorption. If you spill a liquid on the surface it beads up just as if you had poured it on the waxed hood of your car.

Launder washable garments using powdered Clean & Fresh and the hottest water suitable for the garments. Continue laundering garments until soot and/or odor are removed. You may have to launder as many as five times. Launder, using liquid household bleach (sodium hypochlorite), if safe for fabric (follow label directions); use color-safe bleach for other garments.

A well-made candle will create virtually no smoke when burning properly. However, if the wick becomes too long, or an air current disturbs the flame's teardrop shape, small amounts of unburned carbon particles (soot) will escape from the flame as a visible wisp of smoke. Without knowing how long the lanterns have been lit, it is challenging to pinpoint the cause. With normal usage and over time, a gray fog will appear inside the glass. Heavy carbon build up over a short period of time is not "normal" and is a strong indicator of poor design and/or manufacturing.

Tiny particle matter or soot is increasingly seen by scientists and regulators as a particuarly dangerous form of air pollution. Small particles can pass through the defenses in the nose and throat and lodge deep into lungs or pass into the bloodstream.

There are currently two kinds of particles regulated by the federal and state governments. "Fine” particles (PM 2.5) are 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller. Larger or “coarse” particles (PM 10) are between 2.5 and 10 micrometers in diameter. Both are smaller than the width of a human hair. Leading-edge research suggests the existence of even smaller, more-damaging “ultrafine” particles.

Particle pollution is usually at its worst in the winter, when stagnant, cold air traps particles close to the ground and wood burning is more popular. Unfortunately, that comforting smoky smell or haze around your neighborhood on cold winter days can be the sign of a health hazard. To help battle particle pollution, our local regulators will begin declaring “Spare the Air” days in the wintertime this year for the first time.

Soot on the logs just adds realism. But, if you want to remove it, you can. A small soft bristle point brush works well or vacuum with a soft brush attachment.

Not really. The oils found in certain fragrances may slightly increase the small amount of soot produced by a candle, but wick length and flame shape are the primary factors that impact sooting in a properly-formulated candle.
