Perennial rye is the best choice for Texas. It isn't truly perennial here due to our intense summer heat. It generally dies away by mid- to late May. Its seed costs more than annual rye, but it more than makes up for it in improved germination and much finer texture (better appearance and much less frequent mowing). Plant the seed at the rate of 8 to 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet in mid-September. Sow half going east-to-west, overlapping with the rest going north-to-south.

Lightly rake the surface inch of soil to remove dead debris and properly prepare the area for seeding. Select a grass seed that is the same type as already growing in your lawn. Lightly apply seed to the soil surface and gently pack to firm the seed into the soil. Apply a light layer of straw or seeding mulch to encourage rapid seed germination. Water lightly until the seed has fully emerged. Do not apply crabgrass preventer to newly seeded areas of your lawn.

Bermuda goes DORMANT when temperatures start dropping below 65 degrees. Once a frost / freeze occurs the grass blades loose their chlorophyll that keeps them looking green, resulting in a dormant / brownish - tan color. The grass will remain this way until extended warm temperatures return in late spring. The only solution is to OVERSEED the Bermuda. It is NOT recommended that a young first year stand of Bermuda be overseeded. You should wait until the second year to overseed with a Ryegrass.

The majority of pre-emergents prevent germination for all types of seeds. A newer pre-emergent under the name Tupersan is a selective pre-emergent that can be used at the time of seeding to prevent weed seed germination and allow grass seed germination.

Mole activity in your lawn, golf course or fields can mangle water lines, which can lead to expensive flood damage. Mole activity may break cables, which can affect phones or any other utility you receive through underground lines. Sometimes residents place rocks along the roadway in front of their homes to keep vehicles off their lawns. This is done primarily on residential streets that don't have curbs. These rocks can be real safety hazards. If a vehicle leaves the roadway, rocks won't stop these out-of-control vehicles, just damage them and possibly injure the occupants. A rock could be hit by a vehicle sending it flying and possibly injuring residents.

Why not? Remember, just before a snow, top dress with a light sprinkle of soil so the birds don’t think you’re a horticultural philanthropist.

Ensure your grass is cut short enough (but not scalped) to prevent it from "laying over" under deep snow cover. A 2 to 2-1/2 inch cutting height should be sufficient. It's actually best to gradually lower your cutting height over the final three cuts of the year, instead of trying to do it all in one final cut. Shorter grass is less likely to suffer from snow mold disease.
