Every person with autism is an individual, and like all individuals, has a unique personality and combination of characteristics. Some individuals mildly affected may exhibit only slight delays in language and greater challenges with social interactions. They may have difficulty initiating and/or maintaining a conversation. Their communication is often described as talking at others instead of to them.

Certain behaviors exhibited to stimulate the senses, such as switching a light on and off repeatedly or humming loudly. Uneven skill development. Some skills are normal or superior for their age while others show significant delay.

The best applications demonstrate the following attributes: (1) scientific merit; (2) responsiveness to the RFA; (3) appropriate level of effort; (4) simplicity (where appropriate); (5) clarity; (6) knowledge of the subject; and (7) appropriate expertise. SIDS is unexpected, usually occurring in healthy-appearing infants under 1 year of age. A SIDS death occurs quickly and usually during sleep. SIDS is rare during the first month of life. Although SIDS can occur in older infants, most SIDS deaths occur by the end of the sixth month, with the greatest number occurring in infants between 2 and 4 months of age (AAP, 2000). In the United States, more SIDS cases are reported in the fall and winter than in spring or summer.
