Most autopsy reports are completed and are generally available to the public within 6 to 8 weeks. In certain cases, particularly those that require extensive additional testing, this may take significantly longer.

Many families are surprised (and angered) to find out that an autopsy report will not be ready for anywhere between 3 and 14 months. The actual autopsy may only take a few hours, but the report is comprised of information that may take months to get back. One example is the toxicology report. There are no forensically accredited toxicology laboratories in the Hamilton County-Chattanooga area, and therefore all samples must be sent out.

The time it takes to perform an autopsy depends on the presence and nature of natural disease and/or injury. Autopsies average a couple of hours.

All reports ordered by 12:00PM will be delivered the next day. All reports ordered after 12:00PM will be delivered within 48 hours.

There are two ways to make a diagnosis for QT syndrome. The first is to check if the QT-interval on the ECG of a suspected patient is prolonged. Because the heart stopps beating when death occurs, this possbility is out of question - except an ECG of the dead person already exists, of course. The only possibility would be to check body fluids of the dead person - in this case blood - for the known gene mutations that cause QT syndrome.

The report is mailed the following day, in most cases, by "Priority Mail". Certainly, the report can be e-mailed or faxed preliminarily while awaiting the formal report. Copies of the report will be e-mailed or faxed to third parties i.e. Buyers Agents, Realtors etc. only by prior written consent of the client.

Depending on the searches ordered, the average turnaround time for reports is generally 4-72 hours. Special requests, in-depth comprehensive backgrounds, subjects with numerous records and areas with noted court delays may take slightly longer.

Answer: Reports will normally be returned between 2 - 4 hours after claims submission. Producing reports is dependent on the total volume of claims received and can fluctuate greatly. The cause and manner of death is a matter of public record and can be released, unless release of such information will hinder or harm an on-going criminal investigation (Iowa Code 22.7(4)). The remainder of the information contained within an autopsy report is confidential and treated as a medical record. This information is available to the immediate and legal next-of-kin and to those with written permission from the immediate and legal next-of-kin.

The records that are required by law to be made, maintained or kept by the County or State Medical Examiner are the Report of Investigation by Medical Examiner, the inventory of property of value, the autopsy report, including its findings and conclusions, and the results of external examinations upon the bodies of deceased persons. Reports and records of autopsies or post-mortems shall be confidential except to the personal family representative or family member, attending physician, prosecuting attorney, or law enforcement agencies having jurisdiction, public health officials or the Department of Labor and Industries in cases which it has an interest. The Medical Examiner or his representative may meet with the family of the deceased person upon request to discuss the findings of the autopsy.
