In the paper version of the exam, test takers answer the same questions in the same order. In the TOEFL computer-adaptive test, the computer "adapts" to the test taker's performance. The first question is of medium difficulty. If answered correctly, the next question given will be more difficult. If answered incorrectly, the following question will be easier. The Test progresses according to this formula, and the level of difficulty is factored into the score.

Internet-based testing makes it possible to capture and score test-taker speech in the most efficient, standardized, and objective manner. Internet-based testing will also make it possible to greatly increase the number of test centers, which is good for test takers.

Most universities still accept the PBT scores. However, you should check with the universities to determine their specific requirements.

International students have to score a minimum 213 (computer-based); 550 (paper-based) or minimum IBT (internet-based test) - Speaking (23), Listening (19), Reading (19) and Writing (15). The scores can't be older than two years.

You can still take the TOEFL iBT test if you come late to the test center up to one hour past the scheduled test time. If you are more than one hour late, then you cannot take the TOEFL iBT test and you will NOT be refunded for the cost of the test.

The TOEFL iBT test has a new Speaking section, which includes independent tasks as well as integrated tasks in which you need to respond to material that you have read and listened to. The lectures and conversations in the Listening section are longer, but the language sounds much more like real life. Also, there are new types of questions that measure understanding of a speaker's attitude, degree of purpose and certainty.

The test is given in English, has 4 sections on reading, listening, speaking and writing and takes about 4½ hours.

Although a 550 TOEFL score satisfies the University's minimum TOEFL score, many programs are looking for much higher scores. The average total TOEFL score that the University of Massachusetts receives now is above 610.
