The reasons are many. First, a properly placed concrete driveway has a much longer life expectancy than an asphalt driveway. A concrete driveway is much cooler in the summer months. Residue from an asphalt driveway can potentially be tracked into your home. This problem does not occur with a concrete driveway. There are many architectural applications for concrete. This allows for different colors, textures, etc.

Paving can be installed over existing concrete or asphalt as long as it is in reasonably good shape. To ensure an adequate foundation for the brick, the existing concrete slab or asphalt should be inspected and repaired as necessary. Any cracks, chips, holes, dips or spalls should be repaired in order to achieve a flat surface. The brick can be installed either with or without mortar. If no mortar is used, a half-inch setting bed of coarse sand should be laid and compacted.

Properly installed Anchor Concrete paving stones provide a superior pavement to asphalt and concrete in a freeze/thaw environment. Paving stones provide a rigid yet flexible pavement that will expand and contract with the freeze/thaw cycles. Each paving stone provides an expansion joint to allow for this movement, unlike concrete slabs that have expansion joints formed and cut into them.

Although asphalt may seem to be the best choice, years have shown us that concrete actually lasts longer, will not break up in the turns and is white instead of black – making it about 40 degrees cooler in the sun. The extra heat and rough surface of asphalt can wear out a set of tires in 2 weeks during the peak season. Asphalt also must be sealed to protect it from damage by gasoline and oil.

Yes, provided you have ample room to allow for the additional 3 inches that will be above the concrete. If this is going into a doorway, you may have a problem with clearance. Also, the concrete should be free of any major cracks. Remember, any movement in the concrete slabs that you are going over will show themselves in the surface of the paving stones.

Oil and grease stains can be difficult to remove completely because they penetrate the concrete surface rapidly. If an oil spill occurs, stop it spreading by encircling with sand, dirt or sawdust. Soak up as much surface oil or grease as possible with an absorbent cloth or powder. Cover residue stain with a poultice made of 1 part lime to 2 parts mineral turpentine. Spread a 5mm layer of the paste over the stained area ensuring a margin of 50 to 100mm around edges.

Absolutely! 12"-18" of compacted base material is recommended for residential driveways. A standard 2-3/8 thick paver can be used for light vehicular (cars and pickup truck) applications. A Colonial random pattern is most popular in these situations.

Concrete is a commonly requested material. To be honest, we don't know much about gluing to concrete. You could check with some building sites. Cement is the adhesive that holds concrete together. It will take some research on our part but we are thinking about doing concrete. A very cool and specialized glue! It does its job then you can roll it into ball and ... well, have a ball with it. The glue that is used for "tip ins" (magazine jargon) is referred to as a Peel and Stick glue.

In the United States, asphalt shingles are categorized as either organic-based or fiberglass-based. Organic-based asphalt shingles are manufactured with a base (also termed mat or substrate) made of various cellulose fibers, such as recycled waste paper and wood fibers. This organic base is then saturated with a specially formulated asphalt coating and surfaced with weather resistant mineral granules.

Epoxy Asphalt pavement has excellent resistance to fatigue cracking and it also helps stiffen the orthotropic deck system. This high performance pavement reduces (dampens) deflection of the deck plate and extends the life of the deck plate. It does not rut or shove even at high deck temperatures. Depending on the design of the deck system it can be applied at any thickness from 25mm to 75 mm or as an overlay at 19 mm.

The epoxy resin component is maintained at 80-85°C prior to mixing. The asphalt/curing agent component is maintained at 150-155°C prior to mixing. The aggregate temperature is controlled to be about 113-124°C. The mixed batch as it leaves the pug-mill (asphalt plant mixing chamber) is controlled to be between 110 and 121° C.

The key elements are maintaining temperature control of the Epoxy Asphalt concrete at the batch plant and completing roller compaction of the Epoxy Asphalt concrete before the Epoxy Asphalt on the deck has cooled too much. The breakdown rolling must be complete before the temperature drops below 82°C and the finish rolling before the temperature drops below 65°C.

When properly designed and applied, Epoxy Asphalt has not failed. The few decks that have had the surfacing replaced exhibited fatigue cracking long after the design life of the pavement and after the pavement had been subjected to many years of truck traffic (fatigue cracks that occur after the design life of the pavement can be filled with a thermo-set polymer to extend the life of the surfacing).
