Almost all rapid prototyping materials can have surface finish and cosmetic improvements made to them. Both SLS and SLA can be sanded, filled and painted to look like injection-molded plastic. Surface texturing can even be applied if time and budget allows. Most parts, however, do not require high level finishing, and are simply sanded and bead blasted. This creates and nice surface finish that is excellent for engineering purposes.

Visual inspection of parts is particularly important if they are to be plated, since the bright surfaces produced by the buffing and plating operations make extremely small defects visible. First the inspector must have some means of polishing the surface, this is best done with a polishing buff but steel wool can also be used (use a back and forth motion, not a circular one). Surfaces must be clean (free of oil, paint or other contaminants that prohibit wettability). A surface finish of 250 R(a) is the generally accepted worst surface finish for cladding. Normally all prototyping processes require post processing operation to give a smooth finish. SLA process still gives much better finish than 3D printing and SLS process. There are different surface finishes for cast iron and aluminium alloy cylinderheads. The important point is that the reconditioner knows and understands the difference, since errors here can seriously compromise the cylinderhead gasket life. Our timber frames are available in four different textured finishes: planed/sanded, rough sawn and hand hewn. As a final surface finish, we typically apply one coat of Danish oil when a natural finish is desired. The mainline tubing can generally be buried with no problems. However, it is possible for burrowing rodents like gophers or moles to chew right through the line. That aside, it is often desirable to bury the line to have it out of the way so it won't be seen or tripped over. No, our lofts are made from unfinished softwood construction grade dimensional lumber, 2x4, 2x6, plywood, the safety rail and bookshelf are made from MDF. For staining the loft, we recommend using Minwax PolyShades all-in-one stain and polyurethane finish, it does a real nice job on all the pine boards including the MDF pieces. A: A matte finish is a bead blast finish on tubing exterior only. The surface has a uniform dull appearance. Most fittings are constructed with a matte finish. An electropolished finish removes a small portion of the surface of the vacuum tubing, usually both inside and out, which results in a surface that traps less water vapor than an unpolished surface. Polished - exactly as it sounds. Be aware that different stones have different polish levels based on the mineral composition of the stone, but generally speaking, polished surfaces have a shine when viewed in the light. Honed - Honed is semi polished or matte finish, with polishing only to a certain level, shy of generating a gloss level on the surface of the stone.
