Drivers should not normally print messages. However, though printf() exists in the kernel, if messages need to be printed to the console (and/or the kernel message buffer) drivers should use cmn_err(9F). cmn_err() also allows the driver to panic the system. It is unlikely that drivers will need to do so, however.
