You may have localized back pain from the needle insertion, which should last a day or so. On the other hand, you may experience generalized back pain, which is not necessarily attributable to the epidural. Studies have shown that mothers who have natural childbirth deliveries are likely to experience generalized back pain as those who have epidurals. In the near future LSU will be offering Biom 6221 as an online course. Applicants may register as a special student in the School of Nursing to take this course. The required prerequisite graduate statistics course must be completed, with a grade of "B" or above.

Epidural analgesia may be useful if you have certain conditions such as heart or lung problems. Occasionally, epidural analgesia may be beneficial if you happen to have preeclampsia (high blood pressure and swollen feet). You should discuss this with your anesthesiologist and obstetrician.
