Iris recognition biometric technology positively determines the identity of an individual by capturing a high resolution digital photograph of the individual's iris. The technology is based on the most mathematically unique biometric -- even between twins or an individual's right and left eyes -- the iris of the eye. The technology is non-intrusive - the individual does not need to touch anything to use the system.

The system has both advantages and disadvantages to electronic fingerprint systems, such as Live Scan. Here are some of the advantages: the iris biometric is about 12 times more unique --- from a science and statistical perspective -- than fingerprint biometrics. There is no need to touch anything (as with fingerprint) to capture the biometric data. A participant simply looks at a digital camera from about 10" to 15" inches and it takes a digital photo of their iris.

Iris recognition is proven to have the highest biometric accuracy, with no false matches in over two million cross-comparisons, according to Biometric Product Testing Final Report March 2001, Center for Mathematics and Scientific Computing, National Physics Laboratory, U.K.). Many Sheriffs are already using iris recognition as an integral part of their arrest, booking, intake, and release process. Roll out of the The Child Project™ application began in January of 2005. During the initial phase of the program, The Child Project™ contacted Sheriffs to gauge their interest in participating in the program.

There could be a number of reasons why the iris scan does not go smoothly. Make sure that you keep a distance of 10 to 15 cm between your eye and the iris scanner, and that you can focus only one eye into the scanner. If you notice that you have a lot of problems with one of your eyes, try using the other eye. Keep only one of your eye focus into the iris scanner and continue to stand still until the computer indicates 'identification is completed'.

Facial recognition systems are built on computer programs that analyze images of human faces for the purpose of identifying them. The programs take a facial image, measure characteristics such as the distance between the eyes, the length of the nose, and the angle of the jaw, and create a unique file called a "template." Using templates, the software then compares that image with another image and produces a score that measures how similar the images are to each other.

Iris need to be thinned or divided before they become overcrowded, generally every 3-4 years. If iris are allowed to become too crowded the bloom will suffer, some varieties may crowd others out and disease problems may be aggravated. Old clumps may be thinned by removing the old divisions at the centers of the clumps and leaving new growth in the ground. Or, you may dig up the entire clump and remove and replant the large new rhizomes.

These are rare tumors. They can be either primary tumors of the iris (e.g. malignant melanoma) or spread from another tumor (e.g. breast, lung). Treatment of these tumors depends on whether the tumor is growing and also whether there is any complication from the tumor (e.g. uncontrolled glaucoma). In the case of glaucoma that does not get better with medication, or if the tumor is growing quickly, it may be necessary to remove the entire eye.

Iris recognition technology is strictly voluntary – just as it is now with any identification card kits that may be used with children. Participants agree to enroll, thereby eliminating privacy concerns. The user voluntarily decides to participate in iris recognition for authentication by looking at a digital video camera from about 5 – 10 inches away from the camera. The technology cannot work without the explicit cooperation of the end-user.

Iris come in every color and tone with the exception of true red. Throughout the catalog you will find detailed descriptions which attempt to convey a mind's eye image of the flower to go along with the picture of the flower. It can be very difficult to describe the complex color blending that takes place in nature, so you may sometimes disagree with a description or question whether it is accurate or matches the picture.

In addition to color, iris may be categorized by flower pattern, form, texture, substance, variegation, season of bloom and American Iris Society awards received. The following terms are used to describe iris: Yellow or near yellow standards with deeper falls which may be either varied or solid tones of brown or purple.

For best results, iris should be planted in July, August or September. It's imperative that the roots of newly planted iris be well-established before the growing season ends. In areas with hot summers and mild winters, September or October planting may be preferred.

Newly set plants need moisture to help their root systems become established. Specific watering information depends on your climate and your soil, but keep in mind that deep watering at long intervals is better than more frequent shallow waterings. Once established, iris normally don't need to be watered except in arid areas. Overwatering is a common error.
