BPD/DS is a combination restrictive and malabsorptive procedure that reduces the size of the stomach by 70%. The pouch is still a bit larger than with other procedures that use restriction. Most surgeons when asked this question by their patients will assure the patient that the RNY gastric bypass or duodenal switch (like earlier surgeries i.e. the stomach stapling - gastroplasty or the intestinal bypass) is reversible. However those seeking reversal sometimes found out differently. One four month post op patient whose body reacted poorly to the surgery rendering her bedfast, sought reversal from several surgeons.

Many of the operations can be found on the Internet, but also prior to operation your surgeon will be glad to discuss the technical portions of the operation. Some patients want to know exactly how each stitch is placed and others do not want to know much about the technical portions of the operation. Please feel free to discuss this with your surgeon.

When an ulcer is located in the duodenum, it is called a duodenal ulcer. Excessive acid causes the mucosa to break and form an ulcer. The mucosa is the moist tissue that lines the stomach, duodenum and other digestive organs. Millions of people in the U.S. suffer from ulcers in the GI Tract and about a third of the U.S. population suffers from the h. pylori bacteria. Since the discovery of the h. pylori bacterium about 2 decades ago, ulcers can now be treated by eradicating the h.

Eliminate hot, spicy, irritating foods from your diet as well as excessive use of alcohol and cigarettes. Smokers are twice as likely to develop ulcers than non-smokers, by providing a more favorable condition for the h. pylori bacteria. Stress and ongoing stressful situations also seem to aggravate an ulcer. Stress seems to increase acid production. Stress can also increase blood pressure and anxiety, therefore causing favorable conditions for the ulcer to grow.

Do not participate in gym or sports for at least 6 weeks after the operation. School notes are available at the office.

You will feel comfortable during surgery. You may be awake or slightly drowsy and might hear some unfamiliar sounds. If there is something that you find uncomfortable, you will be able to tell your surgeon about it through the drapes over your head. Your greatest contribution to the success of the surgery will be to relax and remain quiet.

Once assignment letters have been sent, no room changes will be made (other than for departmental needs) until the second week of classes.
