Lead-free is defined as absence of a significant amount of lead (Chemical symbol Pb) in a package or part make-up. In an IC package, Pb is commonly found in the external lead finish or plating. In Chip Scale Packages (UCSP and FlipChip), Pb is found in the Solder Bumps.

We clean the parts that we receive with our automated washing system. This removes foreign elements that may interfere with the painting process. Things such as grease and dirt contaminate the paint and weaken the bond between the powder and the metal. Diodes, Inc.'s products defined as "Lead Free" will contain no purposefully added Lead either internally or externally. Only trace elements may remain. These products will have no external Lead, but will still contain internal Lead in the form of high temperature die / Lead bonding solder. Remaining Lead percentage by weight will vary by product package and type. Lead in this type of solder is RoHS Exempt as of this date.

This depends on demand. Major customers who continue to require SnPb Finish may be accommodated for a period determined by individual agreements.

Lead-free (Pb-free) surface finishes are most commonly composed of 100% matte tin, with the exception of a few package types that consist of other RoHS-compliant plating finishes such as nickel palladium. All UCSP and flip-chip packages contain lead. However, the lead contained in these packages is currently RoHS compliant. Studies to find a Pb-free solution for UCSP and flip-chip packages are ongoing.
