Initially, we advise an international applicant to attach photocopies of his/her score reports with the application, but official reports issued by ETS will be required before full processing of that application will take place. In some instances, the Graduate School will accept certified copies of these reports.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and GRE (Graduate Records Examination) are common suitability tests which international applicants require for graduate study. Students whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL unless they have completed a degree from an English-instructed university. Students who have yet to sit for the test, may still submit their applications.

When should I apply? The deadline for fall admission is May 15, but we start admitting students early in February. Applications that are received after we have started the admission process have a reduced chance of admission because there will be fewer open positions remaining. For fall applicants, we recommend that the application be mailed no later than mid-January in order to have the best chance of admission. The answer to both questions is yes.

Once you ask ETS to send score reports to UCSB, please allow two to three weeks for processing. Once your scores have arrived, Graduate Division will update your application status.

For foreign applications, we require a TOEFL score of 600. While your GRE score is important, we have no specific cut-off for GRE scores, and consider the GRE score to be just one part of your overall application. All applicants must submit a GRE score to be considered for fellowships or graduate teaching assistantships.

Yes, we can accept a copy of the score reports for the initial review of the file. The reports can be faxed, mailed, or scanned and emailed to dgs@cheme.cornell.edu. If you are accepted into the program, you will have plenty of time to provide official scores to us.

International students have to score a minimum 213 (computer-based); 550 (paper-based) or minimum IBT (internet-based test) - Speaking (23), Listening (19), Reading (19) and Writing (15). The scores can't be older than two years.

YES. Almost all the universities require the original TOEFL score to be sent by ETS. If the student shortlist the universities before they write the TOEFL, they will be able to send the scores to 4 universities at free of cost during their test. If student request for additional score reporting by ETS they have to pay $15 per each additional university.

Getting a visa depends on your luck. There are several Indian students here who have low GRE/TOEFL scores and have got Visa. On the other hand, we know of many Indians who did not get a visa to UA due to their low scores. However, getting a visa to UA is not as hard as getting a visa to some other universities.

These tests do help but are not mandatory as far as the admission into a university or college is concerned. However, the students, whose academic records are not good, they may take these tests to support their claim for admission.

You need to take the GRE only if your undergraduate GPA was below 3.0. You need to take the TOEFL only if you have no academic degrees from English-speaking countries.
