You can turn your region 2 only DVD player into a multi-region player by adding a micro-chip, or with some players, can be hacked to become multi-region by pressing a combination of keys on the remote control. The former method should be done by a specialist company who will usually give you a replacement warranty as modifying your player this way will void the manufacturer’s warranty. Hacks can usually be found on the internet or newsgroups. DVD magazines are also a good source for hacks.

You can only play a region 1 DVD on a region 1 or multi-region DVD player. Most DVD players sold in UK high-street shops are set to region 2. However, it is possible to modify your player to be able to player region 1 DVDs. Also, there are an increasing number of players sold that are already multi-region.

Firstly you need to confirm that you DVD ROM drive is region free (See 6.3), then it is just a case of downloading the appropriate patch for you player.

If you are shown a screen stating that there has been a Region Error when you try to load your DVD disc, this means that the disc you are attempting to play contains a Region Code which is different to that of your DVD player (also meaning that your DVD player is not Multi-Region compatible) and so the disc will not run on this machine. You should never see this error when playing Region 0 discs.

If you have requested a video for viewing on the screen, you will be provided with 2 dvd copies of your video. You can play it on all computers with a dvd player, as well as dvd players hooked up to your tv. For viewing on the screen, you will need to hook up a projector to your computer/laptop, and your video will be enlarged and viewable on screen as it is playing on your computer.

In order to change the region code of a Kaleidescape Player or Reader, a DVD containing the new region code must be present in the Player or Reader's DVD/CD-ROM drive. Kaleidescape recommends the following procedure when changing region codes. Locate the component (Player or Reader) whose region code you wish to change on the Components tab of the Installer Web Utility. Set "When Import Finishes:" to "Keep disc in drive" and click "OK".

Not all DVD Player can be modified via the remote control however there is an ever growing number of players that can be modified using appropriate remote codes. DVD Reviewer has an excellent 'Multi Region' page full of hacks for players, including new ones as they become known.
