The Live View feature allows you to use the LCD monitor as a viewfinder to compose shots or to shoot while viewing an enlarged display on the monitor. While setting up a shot, changes you make to the Exposure Compensation and White Balance (WB) settings are previewed on the Live View monitor so you can see their effect before shooting. The effects are previewed in all shooting modes, including those in which the camera automatically adjusts exposure and/or white balance, such as Scene mode.

You can adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor from the [SETUP] menu. Press the [MENU] button and use the arrow pad to select [SETUP]. Press the [OK/FUNCTION] button to advance to the next screen. Use the Up and Down arrows to navigate to the icon of the computer monitor. (It is on page 3 of the Setup menu, above the clock icon.) Press the Right arrow to advance to the adjustment screen. Use the arrow pad to brighten (Up arrow) or darken (Down arrow) the screen.

The cells of Liquid Crystals behave in different ways when they are exposed to varying electrical voltages. Behind this liquid crystal sandwich is bright florescent light.

Plasma TV's have a larger viewing angle, usually 160 degrees. The size of LCDs is limited and they use liquid crystals.

Unlike standard CRT and Plasma televisions, since there are no phosphors that light up, less power is need for operation and the light source in an LCD television generates less heat than a Plasma or traditional television. Also, because of the nature of LCD technology, there is no radiation emitted from the screen itself. Apart from better contrast due to its ability to show deeper blacks, plasma screens typically have better viewing angles than LCD.

LCD monitors use liquid crystals sandwiched between various layers of filters and glass. The innermost layer is a fluorescent backlight. The light produced first passes through two polarizing filters then a layer containing cells. Each cell contains liquid crystals. Electric fields then straighten the liquid crystals within the cell so that light is not bent at this level. Each pixel on an LCD monitor comprises of three cells. One cell corresponds to red, one to green, and one to blue.
