Keys can be bound to commands either interactively or in your .emacs file. To interactively bind keys for all modes, type M-x global-set-key <RET> key cmd <RET>. To bind a key just in the current major mode, type M-x local-set-key <RET> key cmd <RET>. To make the process of binding keys interactively easier, use the following “trick”: First bind the key interactively, then immediately type C-x <ESC> <ESC> C-a C-k C-g.

In case you're not familiar with the "bind" feature, the concept is that that you can take a command (or a set of commands) and assign it to a single key to activate instead of having to type it in repeatedly at the console. Let's say you want to bind the grappling hook to the F2 key. Pull down the console and type bind f2 "use grapple". When you press the F2 key, the grappling hook will activate. The function key problem with TNOS under X has to do with the fact that the terminfo entry for xterm is seriously broken in many distributions (I know it is in Slackware through at least 1.2.0). Following is an "xterm.tic" souce file for my hacked version that restores fkey functionality. Run it through tic to generate the new database file, and the problem should be solved in xterms (or rxvts) opened thereafter. BTW -- this problem drove me nuts for almost a month. Arrow keys are bound to <Left>, <Right>, <Up> and <Down>. Under X11, keys are referred to by their keysym. One can use either xmodmap -pk or the xev program to determine what the keysym a particular key on a keyboard is currently generating. If the keysym that is being used is not known by Tk, you may have to edit its ks_names.h file. There is a note in this file that indicates that one should not edit it - but this is where the keysym must be for it to be recognized. See similar questions...

All keybindings in Eterm are based on the concept of keysyms. (See the question above for more info on keysyms.) To bind a key with Eterm, its keycode must correspond to a valid keysym. You can use the xmodmap command as shown above to map keycodes to keysyms. Once the key sends a valid keysym, you can have Eterm recognize and respond to it in a particular way using action bindings. The assignment is by selecting the first 12 items in inventory after the sort. Setting the order is done by giving thought to the order of your service items in inventory and setting the most important to the top of the sort. Note that it is an alpha-numeric sort. The "." forces the service items to the top (above retail inventory), then the sort order is numbers 1 to 9 then letters A to Z. So .1 would be before .A which would be before .AB. Terminfo, some versions of termcap, and some versions of curses have support for these non-ASCII keys. Typically, a special key sends a multicharacter sequence (usually beginning with ESC, '\033'); parsing these can be tricky. (curses will do the parsing for you, if you call keypad first.) Under MS-DOS, if you receive a character with value 0 (not '0'!) while reading the keyboard, it's a flag indicating that the next character read will be a code indicating a special key.
