Pixels represent the smallest point of light a computer monitor can display. A dot represents the smallest printable unit on a printer. So they are very similar but the names are different depending on whether you are dealing with a display or printed material. The dimensions of the pictures do not have to be fixed.

Yes, we have aerial color photography available. The pixel resolutions are 1 foot for rural and 6 inch for urban areas. This data is available online at a resampled resolution of 2 feet per pixel. We also have infrared photography that was flown by SCDNR in 1999 with pixels of approximately 3 feet. Prints: We scan standard prints at 300 or 600dpi (dots per inch). That means that from a 4x6 print at 300dpi you'll get an image that is 1200 x 1800 pixels or 2400 x 3600 for 600dpi. From our tests, 300 dpi provided the best balance between quality and size using standard photographs for viewing and printing purposes.
