The degree of cracking (or "checking" as it is called by carvers) that occurs in a carving really depends on several things. First it depends on the amount of moisture in the log. If the log is freshly cut, it retains a great deal of the original moisture of the tree. It may take years for the wood to dry out. Most logs dry at about 1 inch per year.
