The Green Party started in West Germany in 1979 when a group of civic organizations united in opposition to nuclear energy and nuclear weapons. Petra Kelly, one of the founding members of the Green Party, became Germany's first female political party leader in 1980. Activists soon started organizing for Green politics around the world. In 1984 Charlene Spretnak authored the Green Ten Key Values, which continue to be the guiding values of Greens in this country.

The Green Party of Sonoma County, or GPSC, is an informal association of Green Party activists working on local political initiatives and candidate campaigns, helping to build the Green Party in Sonoma County, and supporting statewide, national, and international Green Party issues at a grassroots level. We are affiliated with the Green Party of California.

We currently do not have an office (though we're always interested in free or low-cost space for meetings, storage, etc.).

The GPSC is an independent, consensus-based group. Projects of the GPSC are led by self-appointed volunteers with the support of the active membership. Every two years voters who are registered Green and living in Sonoma County may elect representatives to the Sonoma County Green Party County Council.

The GPSC endorses the key values and the platform of the Green Party of California. The platform of the party is reviewed and developed at the state General Assembly (aka Plenary) twice a year by delegates from each active county.

The GPSC general meeting is the third Thursday of each month at the Environmental Center. Meeting times and places are subject to change, please contact us in advance to confirm the meeting date or add and item to the agenda. The Green Party of Canada was founded in 1983, born from a conference held at Carleton University in Ottawa. Under their first leader, Dr. Trevor Hancock, the party ran 52 candidates in the 1984 federal election. In 2004, the GPC became only the fourth political party in Canadian history to run a full slate of candidates - one in each of the 308 electoral districts!

Healthy Kids Sonoma County is a new locally developed and funded program that will provide comprehensive health coverage for children of low income families in Sonoma County. Healthy Kids builds upon state sponsored programs (Medi-Cal and the Healthy Families program) to provide health insurance coverage to low-income families who cannot afford private health coverage.

It is a Special District formed by a vote of the citizens of Sonoma County in 1990. Special Districts are government entities that are created for special purposes. The entire County is included in this District. The voters chose to form the District to acquire and preserve agricultural and open space lands as a legacy for future generations.

Launched with funding from a US Environmental Protection Agency grant, Green Advantage? is the result of collaboration between the Nature Conservancy, Science Applications International Corporation, and the University of Florida. As a result of successful piloting and the work of scores of professionals assisting in the development of curricula, training and Exams, approximately 1000 building-related practitioners have taken the Green Advantage® Certification Exam.

The Green Party of Canada (GPC) is the registered Canadian political party of the Green Movement. The purpose of the Green Party of Canada is to affect a 'greening' of our economy, society and environment through political activities - by electing officials and influencing government. The GPC is made up of Electoral District Associations (EDA), which do the work of the Green Party on a local riding-by-riding basis.

Healthy Kids Sonoma County is the program developed by our county's local Children's Health Initiative to expand health care access to uninsured children in our community. Some 20+ community organizations have formed this coalition. The goal of Healthy Kids Sonoma County is to get children enrolled in existing health plans like Medi-Cal and Healthy Families and in the newly created Healthy Kids health plan.
