What is a Bi-Flex Truss Rod and how does it work?

Fender®.com ::.
The Bi-Flex Truss Rod (used on most American and American Deluxe Series instruments) was designed by Fender in the early 1980's. Unlike most truss rods, which allow only convex neck adjustments (back bow), the Bi-Flex allows you to adjust for either a concave or convex bow. If you tighten the truss rod nut it bows the neck backwards. As you loosen the nut you will find the neck's neutral position (the truss rod is not in use).

How does the truss-to-truss system work?

Griffin Greenhouse & Nursery Supplies: Technical Support
With a truss-to-truss system, the panels of curtain material move across the distance between one truss and the next. This distance leads to more compact bundles of fabric when the system is uncovered than are possible with gutter-to-gutter. There are three ways to configure the truss-to- truss system. First it can be flat at gutter height, minimizing heated area and making installation easy. See similar questions...

How often does my truss rod need to be adjusted?

FRETS.COM FAQ
This is a tricky question. Ideally, your truss rod never needs to be readjusted unless your instrument has a flexible neck and you change to a different gauge of strings. In the real world, however, the truss rod is there to help control the curvature of the neck and may need readjusting for a variety of reasons. The fact is that some particular instruments have less stable necks than others. See similar questions...

When should the truss rod be adjusted?

Seagull FAQ's
Your truss rod should be adjusted when your neck develops a bit of a bow in it. The reason for the bow is a combination of the string tension that is constantly applied to the neck along with changes in relative humidity. Humidity is the most important part of this equation. Wood reacts to changes in relative humidity when it absorbs or loses moisture. See similar questions...

How Do I Properly Adjust The Truss Rod?

Hi! I just wanted to put down in writing some things I've observed while tweaking truss rods, in case someone else might benefit from them. I am not a luthier and I don't play one on TV. I have, however, done light repairs and adjustments on my instruments over the thirty-two years I've been playing. Though they influence this discussion, in the interest of brevity, I'm eliminating the influence of the bridge height, neck angle, and nut height (though I will reference the nut later). Can I order a kit without a truss rod?

Siminoff Banjo & Mandolin - Mandolin Kit FAQs
Absolutely. However, please be sure to let us know if you would like us to cut the truss rod slot and bore the truss rod nut's pocket or leave it plain. You can also order the kit with all of the truss rod parts, but without having us put the rod in (so that you can do it). If you plan to use carbon fiber or some other truss rod system, our truss rod slots are 1/4" (6.35mm) wide and are cut at a slope from the nut down to the heel to keep the rod as low as possible in the neck.
