The Bi-Flex Truss Rod (used on most American and American Deluxe Series instruments) was designed by Fender in the early 1980's. Unlike most truss rods, which allow only convex neck adjustments (back bow), the Bi-Flex allows you to adjust for either a concave or convex bow. If you tighten the truss rod nut it bows the neck backwards. As you loosen the nut you will find the neck's neutral position (the truss rod is not in use).

With a truss-to-truss system, the panels of curtain material move across the distance between one truss and the next. This is a tricky question. Ideally, your truss rod never needs to be readjusted unless your instrument has a flexible neck and you change to a different gauge of strings. In the real world, however, the truss rod is there to help control the curvature of the neck and may need readjusting for a variety of reasons. Your truss rod should be adjusted when your neck develops a bit of a bow in it. The reason for the bow is a combination of the string tension that is constantly applied to the neck along with changes in relative humidity. Humidity is the most important part of this equation. Absolutely. However, please be sure to let us know if you would like us to cut the truss rod slot and bore the truss rod nut's pocket or leave it plain. You can also order the kit with all of the truss rod parts, but without having us put the rod in (so that you can do it). If you plan to use carbon fiber or some other truss rod system, our truss rod slots are 1/4" (6.35mm) wide and are cut at a slope from the nut down to the heel to keep the rod as low as possible in the neck. In my clinical practice most of the patients for whom I recommend Osteo-Bi-Flex have had knee arthroscopy and I know what the inside of their joint looks like.
