It's not "based on a true story" which half of Hollywood pretends to be because it keeps it real, man; it was based on a Japanese movie (by Nakata Hideo) which itself was based on a Japanese book (by Suzuki Koji), in which the Rachel character was male and the Noah character was a confessed serial rapist. And no, we're not making that up.

I got the idea from clearing away that old garbage dump on an island near our cottage and finding the pair of spectacles. It was those small wire glasses that made me decide to write the story about a girl who, when she puts on the glasses, goes into the past to help a ghost solve a problem and find some peace. It is not based on a real story, but on fragments of things I've read, dreams, bits of my own life, and, of course, mainly my imagination - which has always worked overtime!

Yes but this was not "Shakespeare in Love". Romeo and Juliet was in fact based on the life of two real lovers who both died for each other and lived in Verona, Italy in 1303. Both the Capulets and Montagues existed in Verona at this time and Shakespeare is reckoned to have discovered this tragic love story in Arthur Brooke's 1562 poem entitled "The Tragical Historye of Romeus and Juliet" .

The book's central idea is true (meeting the angel), the journey to Mojave too, but much of what is written is fictionalized. While the story of Captain Algren isn't true (just like the story of Jack and Rose isn't true in Titanic), the events that surround Algren and the time period are true. In 1877, the Samurai lost their final major battle, during a rebellion, when they went up against more modern weaponry. This factual event is part of the basis of the telling of The Last Samurai.

Whilst Memoirs of a Geisha is a fictional story, Arthur Golden did interview two ex-geisha during his researching phase. The first geisha he spoke with was Kiharu Nakamura, whom he spent an evening speaking with. Kiharu-san has her own biography out about her life as a Shimbashi Geisha. The second geisha he spoke with, and whom he gives a lot of credit to in helping him understand the geisha world is Mineko Iwasaki, who was a very famous maiko and geiko in Gion, Kyoto.

The few documents that exist are not available translated into a language I can read (alas, my Hungarian is limited to "köszönöm" and "jol" and "jo napot" and what I vaguely remember from my youth). Her diaries may be more fiction than fact. At least one person has told me that he has seen them and held them in his hands, and has relatives who can read them and have translated portions.

Not really. First, there is no historical record of such a love affair ever having taken place. Second, the film is a work of plausible fiction. Third, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway at age 18 and penned Romeo and Juliet which features in the film in 1595 at the age of 31. Thus any depiction of such a love affair during the writing of Romeo and Juliet would have to have meant Shakespeare was cheating on Anne.

Yes, it is. She really has multiple personalities (after all I saw with my own eyes in the year that I spent with her, I believe it's true), she really did plan on killing me in my sleep, and she really did cheat on me with my best friend and dump me for him. And so on.
