There are several reasons to consider buying into MiniDV equipment, and some good reasons not to as well. It's easy to take still pictures and send them to the web. The official answer is that different formats serve different purposes for different people. But the real answer is that format chaos has been around just about as long as there have been video or audio formats. Mostly this is because every company in the market has introduced its own format at one point or another, and once a format is out there, it stays out there forever.

Based on the suitability characteristics identified earlier, the following formats are acceptable for digital video files:

NARA does not consider the following digital video files to have sufficient quality for archival retention: Files created for "streaming" broadcast (e.g. RealAudio, Windows Media) - these files sacrifice quality for file size. They are often reduced from high-resolution files by removing high and low frequency ranges and compressing the remaining signal. MiniDV is the consumer format, the one that you're almost certainly going to be using if you're a reader of this FAQ. MiniDV cassettes are small, cute and can record an hour in standard format. MiniDV tapes cost from $ 14 to $ 20 each. MiniDV cameras cost from around $ 1,000 to $ 4,500. There is a 90 minute slow speed format, but I don't recommend using it; the one time I tried, unusable video was the result. HDV is the high-definition form of MiniDV.

Copying digital video is like copying a computer file - you can make as many copies as you like without effecting the quality of the original source. Standard definition video refers to videotape formats which conform to the original specification for video including analogue and digital formats.

You can transfer Video to your PC through a Firewire cable, although some Digital Video cameras offer USB or USB2 connections. USB is not ideal, since the transfer speed is very low. However, USB2 connections are comparable in speed to Firewire. If your PC doesn't have a Firewire port or USB2 port, you will need to install a PCI Firewire or USB2 card. These are widely available and relatively easy to install. Fire wire ports are also included in the Creative Audigy range of sound cards.
