You can use fiberglass instead of the provided polyester skin, but we don't recommend it. While fiberglass requires less maintenance, it is actually more fragile than the skin that comes with the kit. The polyester skin will flex when it comes in contact with another object, whereas the fiberglass may crack and require extensive repair at home. If the polyester skin does get a hole in it, it is easy to do a field fix and continue on your way. See similar questions...

I am not against polyester canvas. It has a similar feel to cotton, but it is more elastic and has a tendency to not always hold its form. Properly installed fiberglass does not settle more than 1% and maintains it’s thermal performance. Most cellulose products settle over time at a rate of about 20% and may loose 20% of its R-Value. The R-Value of Fiberglass does not deteriorate over time. Cellulose can sometimes loose R-Value over time. Insulation can loose R-Value when wet. Fiberglass is not absorbent. In general, polyester resins won't cure properly or bond well to epoxy resin products without a "tie-coat" barrier resin in between. System Three SB-112 resin system can be used as a tie coat in between epoxy laminating or coating resins, and polyester laminating or gelcoat resins. Nitrocellulose finishes are really the rare breed today. Because of the environmental hazards of spraying this material it is becoming regulated or outlawed in more and more areas, beginning with California. We all like the way it looks on vintage instruments, but it does shrink, crack and scratch much worse than either polyester or polyurethane finishes. Working with epoxy is not difficult but like many other things in life its gets easier the more you have tried it. Normally most epoxy suppliers have some lecture of their product and how it's used. If you do not have any experience with epoxy and fiberglass we recommend that you start out with a design where you only need to use fiberglass tape. Due to the inherent bonding qualities of our epoxies, application on fiberglass is possible. Fiberglass linings need to be scourged with heavy grade sandpaper or grinding disks to provide more mechanical bonding strength. Epoxy is not like the smelly fiberglass resin you may have worked with (that's polyester resin.) The epoxy CLC uses is not solvent-based and has very little odor. It's simply a two-part plastic that becomes hard when mixed. However, you need to wear disposable gloves and an apron to keep it off your skin and clothes and, perhaps, use a drop cloth on the floor. Rayon threads break easily, bleed, and can shrink. Radiante' polyester thread is bonded and abrasion resistant, stronger than rayon, and are break and fray resistant. Polyester is color-fast doesn't bleed and is bleach resistant. The polyester is multi-purpose and can be used for all types of sewing including serger/overlock use.
