Absolutely! Maximized playing surface is the key. Measuring a billiards table is a playing surface measurement. Simply measure from the inside rail points in each direction to determine the true size of your table. For instance an Eight foot table is 44 inches wide by 88 inches long (inside cushion). Since most full size snooker and pool cues are 57" or 58"” in length, around five feet of space is needed between the cushion rails and the surrounding walls or furniture. However there are very few recreational rooms that do not have some sort of obstacle that interferes with play. Sideboards, fireplaces, sloping walls and furniture often interrupt and affect perfect cueing room. In some instances a shorter cue may enable play where room space is at a premium. We would recommend that you allow 5ft of cueing room around the periphery of the pool table you choose. This is the length of a standard pool cue. That's a really good question. Room size and average listening levels are ultimately tied together. A "headbanger" in a small to medium room may be less satisfied with the listening levels acheived than a chamber music listener in a very large room. And then there's home theater volume levels. To accommodate the standard 57 inch cue length, we recommend a 5 foot clearance around the playfield of the table. However, this is negotiable with smaller cues and open walls. It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If diving is important, the pool needs to be at least 36' long, 14' wide and at least 8' deep.
