A:) The CD-ROM which comes with the Ericsson SH888 telephone includes a script which makes a new entry in the Registry. All this does is create a new device name for the COM3: port, which is then accessible to most Windows CE comms applications. You simply select the new IR port device and continue to use your software as before. The process is covered in more detail at the web site of Arne Hess (http://windowsce.hess.net/irda.html) which covers Windows CE /mobile phone topics in detail.

A. We cannot recommend any specific port, as we aren't affiliated or associated with or anyhow related to any IR port manufacturer. The only thing we can say, that IR port should fully support IRDA protocol, at least, in one of its modes. However, some of IR ports may require additional adjustment (see above).

We have done some work on such a port, but it only reached an early stage, and certainly not a useful one. It's no longer being actively worked on.

A:) Yes, although it depends on your model of mobile phone, whether it is data compatible and whether your mobile phone network allows it. Once everything is configured, you can use your Windows CE computer (handheld or palmtop) to do anything which you could do other an ordinary modem. This means you can connect to the Internet for email, news, IRC, Web browsing and so on. You can also send and receive faxes and synchronise with your desktop computer.

A:) When the handheld and palmsize PC's first appeared, they were based on one of two processors: a MIPS or an SH3 device. The HP Jornada 820 is one of the first devices to use a StrongARM processor instead. This chip is fast, uses little power and has built-in features such as support for USB and the ability to mirror video output on an external monitor (which is why a Jornada can be used with a monitor all the time, not just for PowerPoint).

Your P935 two-way interactive messaging device is equipped with an infrared (IR) port. The charger base also has an IR port and uses a connection between these two ports to transfer data to and from your computer, e.g., uploading or synchronizing Contact data to your PC or downloading new application onto your device. You can also communicate with other IR Port capable devices or printers.

The Music Player does not provide any IR inputs. However, it is possible to provide IR control of a Music Player indirectly through an external control system such as those offered by Crestron or AMX.

A:) Unfortunately, No. Socket Communications has dropped support for their CompactFlash pagers. http://www.socketcom.com/pagprods.htm A:) This doesn't appear to work. You need to create your own IR port, mapped to COM3:, as with the other handheld / palmsized computers. In other words, you need to edit the registry. This can be difficult if you don't have access to a PC based Registry Editor, as programs for the HP are few and far between at the moment. Q:) My Jornada has a USB port.

Windows 95 handles enumerating PCMCIA COM ports (i.e. PCMCIA modems) much better than the case of parallel ports. After initial installation or any configuration changes of the SPP-100, Windows 95 may fail to assign a logical LPT number to the parallel port. The solution to this problem is to shut down and restart Windows 95 with the SPP-100 installed.

A. No. We don't support synchronization with PDA devices at present. Indeed, it is one of our prior taks, but we cannot say precisely, when we will implement support for such devices.

A:) There was a virus scanner at one point, but it's been pulled from the market. Considering that CE devices don't have the traditional vulnerabilities to viruses that most desktop PC's have (like integrated running of scripts in Outlook email previews) you don't need to worry about viruses on your CE devices...yet. Someday, I'm sure someone will come up with something, but for now, there are no Windows CE viruses that I'm aware of.

A:) Only the HPC Pro has a text-based shell window built-in (run CMD.EXE from the Start/Run/ prompt to open it). There are third-party shells for other systems, such as the version from Ruksun (Shell Force) - this is only compatible with CE 1.0 however.

A:) That depends. At the moment, most mobile phones require connection to an interface which sits between the phone and the computer. Most of these interfaces are in the form of PC-Card (PCMCIA) cards, designed for Windows 95 computers. This means they won't work with Windows CE machines (and that's assuming you have a PC-Card slot in the first place).
