The StyleMaster bed in Queen, King and California King sizes can be used either as a regular bed with box spring and mattress or as a platform bed, with no box spring. The side rails attach to the headboard and footboard by means of a metal clip and can be installed in one of two positions. When installed in the lower position, a box spring may be used, but depending on the depth of the box spring and mattress, the mattress may be higher than the footboard.

Our loft beds are designed for mattresses no thicker than 9 1/2" thick; no box spring or other platform is necessary unless your mattress is unusually thin. If your mattress is thicker than 9 1/2", but LESS than 15 1/2”, an extra set of guardrails is necessary and is available for order. With the maximum mattress thickness, the guardrails will extend 5” UP from the mattress surface, which is the minimum to comply with Consumer Product Safety Guidelines.

While you can certainly use your existing box spring, we usually recommend that you order a foundation because a foundation is a completely firm and completely flat surface for your bed to lie on. This will ensure that your bed contours completely to you and your body and not to any soft spots of slats in a box spring. We do recommend placing a sheet of plywood over your boxspring if you choose to use it. Waterbed mattresses do not wear out fast like many innerspring beds.
